A heavy duty diesel shop supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a diesel repair shop, including assigning work to mechanics, diagnosing complex vehicle issues, ensuring quality repairs, managing parts inventory, maintaining safety standards, and providing technical guidance to the team, all while prioritizing customer service and timely completion of repairs on heavy-duty trucks and equipment like loaders, excavators, and large machinery. Key responsibilities:
- Work allocation and scheduling: Assign repair jobs to mechanics based on their expertise and available time, creating and maintaining a daily work schedule.
- Diagnosis and repair oversight: Inspect vehicles, diagnose complex mechanical issues on heavy-duty diesel engines, and oversee the repair process, ensuring proper procedures are followed.
- Quality control: Inspect completed repairs to ensure quality standards are met, including thorough testing and documentation.
- Parts management: Manage parts inventory, order necessary parts, and track part usage to maintain optimal stock levels.
- Technical guidance: Train and mentor mechanics on new repair techniques, diagnostic tools, and industry best practices.
- Safety compliance: Enforce shop safety procedures, ensure proper use of tools and equipment, and maintain a safe working environment.
- Reporting and documentation: Prepare repair orders, maintain detailed service records, and generate reports on shop performance and productivity.
- Maintenance management: Oversee routine maintenance of shop equipment and tools.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engine systems: Thorough understanding of engine components, electrical systems, hydraulics, and transmission systems.
- Diagnostic skills: Ability to accurately diagnose complex mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
- Leadership abilities: Effectively manage and motivate a team of mechanics.
- Communication skills: Clearly communicate with customers, mechanics, and management regarding repair needs and progress.
- Technical proficiency: Familiarity with computer-based diagnostic systems and repair software.
- Problem-solving skills: Analyze complex technical issues and identify effective solutions.
- Mechanical aptitude: Hands-on experience with repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
- Valid mechanic's license (if required by state)
