The Process & Quality Chemist is responsible for supporting product quality, batch consistency, and manufacturing performance through laboratory testing, raw material qualification, process troubleshooting, and batch adjustment activities. This role works closely with Quality, Production, and R&D to ensure products consistently meet established specifications and manufacturing standards.
The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both laboratory and manufacturing environments to resolve formulation and process-related challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Control Testing
- Perform analytical and physical testing of:
- Incoming raw materials
- In-process batches
- Finished products
- Conduct routine testing including:
- pH
- Density
- Viscosity/rheology
- Appearance and sensory evaluation
- FTIR/ATR analysis
- Calculate, verify, and document test results accurately and completely
- Maintain compliance with established specifications, SOPs, and GMP requirements
Raw Material Qualification
- Review Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) and verify compliance with specifications
- Sample and evaluate incoming raw materials for approval or rejection
- Support material quarantine and investigation activities when required
- Assist with inventory inspections and raw material handling activities as needed
Batch Troubleshooting & Process Support
- Support troubleshooting of out-of-specification or non-conforming batches
- Perform and document batch adjustments, including:
- pH correction
- Viscosity adjustment
- Formula standardization and physical property correction
- Partner with Production and R&D to:
- Improve batch consistency
- Resolve formulation and processing issues
- Support scale-up and manufacturing optimization efforts
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate laboratory and batch adjustment records
- Ensure traceability of testing, adjustments, and investigations
- Support internal audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections
- Assist with SOP development and revision activities
Equipment & Calibration
- Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation including:
- pH meters
- Viscometers/rheometers
- Density measurement equipment
- FTIR/ATR instrumentation
- Laboratory balances
- Perform and document routine calibration and verification activities
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze quality and process trends related to viscosity, density, pH, and other critical parameters
- Identify root causes of variability and support corrective actions
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives focused on product consistency, efficiency, and quality performance
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific field
- 2+ years of experience in a quality control, manufacturing support, or process chemistry role preferred
- Experience in cosmetics, personal care, OTC, household products, or related manufacturing environments preferred
- Experience troubleshooting batches and supporting manufacturing operations
- Familiarity with emulsions, surfactants, and foam-based systems preferred
- Knowledge of GMP/cGMP environments and laboratory documentation practices

- Ability to lift and handle raw material samples and laboratory equipment as needed
- Forklift certification or willingness to become certified preferred

Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
