The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting
for a Wildlife Veterinarian located in Fairbanks!
What you will be doing:
Serve as the lead supervisory veterinarian for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, and the primary wildlife health veterinarian. Duties include:

Leading the division’s Wildlife Health and Veterinary Services Program, which includes a full-time capture veterinarian and multiple other full and part-time staff members;

Working with division’s wildlife biologists to survey wildlife health and diagnose diseases and parasites;

Coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies on animal disease outbreak issues and surveillance of zoonotic or emerging diseases, including serving as the primary liaison with the Alaska State Veterinarian, Department of Health, and federal agencies on domestic animal and human health issues related to wildlife; and

Developing and recommending mitigation procedures for emerging diseases when necessary.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is in Fairbanks and includes work carried out in the office, lab, and field (sometimes remote). Daily work is highly variable and includes working with veterinary staff and wildlife biologists, conducting necropsies, formulating and tracking budgets, carrying out field work, and writing manuscripts and other reports. Routine travel is needed to work with staff, participate in meetings, and carry out field work.
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Proven ability to effectively manage a program and resources across Alaska, including the supervision, motivation, and mentorship of employees.

Knowledge and experience with the concepts, principles, and theories of animal diseases, host/pathogen relationships, and wildlife biology, including population dynamics, reproduction, behavior, conservation, and the effects of diseases and parasites on wildlife populations.

Veterinary medicine knowledge, experience, and skills involving wildlife handling such as necropsy procedures, surgical implants, use of anesthetics, treatment, tranquilization, immobilization, physical capture, disease diagnosis, tissue and/or specimen collection, translocation, and animal welfare.

Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively on complex issues with diverse groups of varying opinions while building and maintaining effective relationships.

Excellent written and verbal communication, including experience explaining complicated wildlife health and disease concepts and results to wildlife biologists, policy makers, and the public.

Special Note:
A valid driver's license is required.
This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

First aid/CPR certification. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Maintain Alaska veterinary medicine licenses in good standing.

No previous convictions on illicit drug or alcohol-related charges, no previous loss or suspension of veterinary license in any state.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Licensure as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine by the State of Alaska;
AND
Two years of professional experience conducting wildlife management, research, or information and education projects which required field work and handling of big game (such as bear, moose, caribou, deer, wolf, etc.) or marine mammals (such as Steller’s sea lion, walrus, Polar Bear, seal, etc.); or providing veterinary care for free-roaming or captive big game or marine mammals.
Special Note:
The duties frequently require spending time in the field; working with large and dangerous animals; traveling in small aircraft and boats; adapting methods and practices to the terrain and climate; and may require living in primitive conditions for brief periods.
An individual, without an Alaska license, who meets the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in the State of Alaska may apply for a vacancy. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the licensing requirement. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting for duty.
