Veterinary Surgery Specialists (VSS) is a state-of-the-art specialty surgery hospital in Berlin, NJ. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Overnight Veterinary Nurse/Technician to join our surgery and ICU team. This role is ideal for an experienced technician who thrives in a critical care environment and is passionate about providing exceptional patient care during overnight hours.
Overview
The Overnight Veterinary Nurse/Technician plays a vital role in supporting our board-certified surgeons and veterinary staff by delivering top-quality patient care, monitoring hospitalized animals, and ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the night. This position blends advanced technical skills with a compassionate, patient-centered approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide attentive overnight care to hospitalized and post-surgical patients.
- Monitor patient vital signs (ECG, blood pressure, SpO₂, temperature, hydration, etc.) and track progress.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, CRIs, and IV fluids as prescribed.
- Perform phlebotomy, collect samples, and run in-house lab work (hematology, bloodwork, urinalysis, etc.).
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and emergency treatments.
- Apply aseptic techniques during surgical and post-op care to prevent infection.
- Safely and compassionately handle and restrain patients of various sizes and temperaments.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, updating both the clinical team and clients.
- Educate pet owners on post-op care, nutrition, and preventive health as appropriate.
- Operate and maintain ICU monitoring and surgical equipment; troubleshoot as needed.
- Ensure the hospital environment, treatment rooms, and kennels remain clean, calm, and organized.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of advanced inpatient/overnight or emergency care experience in a referral or specialty hospital.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent preferred, but not required.
- Strong understanding of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, physiology, and critical care practices.
- Skilled in fluid therapy, CRIs, anesthesia monitoring, and catheterization techniques.
- Excellent communication skills for both client interaction and team collaboration.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and remain calm under pressure.
- Compassionate, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering the highest standard of care.
- Must be able to safely restrain and lift up to 40 lbs; frequent standing and bending required.
- Experience with equine care or dog training is advantageous but not required.
Compensation & Schedule
- Part-Time Position – Overnight shifts (10–12 hours).
