Job Title: High School Custodian
Department: Facilities / Maintenance
Reports To: Lead Custodian or Facilities Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Full-Time (may include evenings, weekends, or school events)
Position Summary:
The High School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role supports the daily operations of the school by performing routine cleaning, basic maintenance, and event setup to ensure that all facilities remain functional and welcoming.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cleaning and Sanitation
- Clean classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, and other school areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors; maintain floor care programs such as waxing and buffing.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
- Dust and wipe surfaces including desks, tables, windowsills, and fixtures.
- Clean windows, glass doors, and mirrors.
Facility Maintenance:
- Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, and reporting repair needs.
- Monitor building systems and notify maintenance staff of safety or facility issues.
- Assist with snow removal, salting walkways, and maintaining safe building access in winter months.
- Support preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
Event Support:
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials for school events, meetings, and activities.
- Ensure facilities are clean and ready before and after events.
Safety and Security:
- Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Maintain safe working conditions and follow OSHA and school safety guidelines.
- Lock and secure buildings and rooms as required.
- Report hazards, damages, or suspicious activity promptly.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial or facilities maintenance experience preferred.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to operate custodial tools such as floor scrubbers, buffers, and vacuums.
- Basic understanding of workplace safety and chemical handling.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and cleanliness standards.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, climbing, and repetitive movement.
Work Environment:
- Work takes place throughout the school building and grounds.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Position requires regular physical activity including lifting, walking, and climbing ladders.
Additional Duties:
- The custodian may perform other related duties as assigned by the Lead Custodian, Facilities Manager, or School Administration to support the overall mission and operation of the school.
