The Wastewater System Operations & Maintenance Technician performs technical and mechanical work involving the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and pump stations and carries out the Division’s Preventive Maintenance program. Performs grease trap and industrial pre-treatment inspections. Serves as back-up plant operator when needed.

Repairs; modifies; retrofits; installs new; inspects; cleans and lubricates operating equipment and facilities such as pumps; motors; compressors; gas and diesel engines; and other related equipment and machinery.

Inspects plant operations on a periodic basis; checking and operating equipment; machinery and pumps to ensure plant is operating properly and according to state and federal regulations.

Performs general building maintenance including snow removal.

Makes periodic readings of gauges and meters for water and oil pressure; oil levels; temperature and air pressure and other readings involved in equipment operations such as electrical and other mechanical equipment such as vehicles and trucks. Fills out daily; weekly; or monthly reports as may be required.

Responds to off hours emergency alarms.

Inspects restaurant grease traps and industrial pre-treatment facilities.
7.
Performs other duties as assigned.
A candidate for this position should have a High School diploma or GED; Mechanical and/or Environmental Engineering college degree preferred; at least four (4) years of demonstrated and documented experience operating and maintaining a WWTP required; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge; skills; and abilities of the position. Must possess a current State of New Hampshire Grade III Wastewater Facility Operator Certification. Alternatively; candidate must possess a State of New Hampshire Grade II Wastewater Facility Operator Certification and must obtain Grade III certification within 18 months from date of hire. Candidate for this position is expected to work toward Grade IV certification.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver license and obtain a CDL-B classification within eight (8) months of appointment.
The Wastewater System Technician must possess extensive knowledge of motors; pumps; compressors; gauges; plumbing; electrical systems; gas and diesel engines; experience and ability to repair and operate various WWTP mechanical and electronic control systems; ability to supervise others; knowledge of WWTP biological and treatment processes; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Town and Public Works officials; employees; vendors; and the general public.
Employee spends the majority of the day operating assigned equipment requiring walking; bending; stooping; squatting; and climbing. Performs heavy physical labor on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces; and rough terrain. Reaches at or above shoulder height; stoops; kneels; crouches; and/or crawls. Frequently lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 75 pounds such as tools; equipment; supplies. Must have hand strength and manual dexterity to grasp and manipulate tools; parts; and supplies; fine finger dexterity to operate computer and laboratory equipment.
Majority of work is performed in the Wastewater Treatment Plant and field setting with exposure to noise; mechanical and electrical hazards; fumes and odors; toxic substances such as chemicals. Some field work is required with exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
