About Build UP
We are a nonprofit organization supporting adults who are ready to leave dead-end jobs behind and build real careers. We provide the funding, community, and a direct pathway into the trades — where apprentices reach mastery, earn strong wages, build stability, and take pride in real work.
We are currently sponsoring adults entering electrical apprenticeships in Salt Lake City, Utah, and standing behind them through the first years of training. We're a dedicated, hands-on team seeking a skilled math tutor-mentor to join us in making a direct, visible impact on the apprentices we sponsor.
The Role
We're looking for a enthusiastic, encouraging math tutor to support our sponsored electrical apprentices — currently between Year 1 and Year 3 of their apprenticeship — as they work through math curriculum-algebra, construction math, and electrical theory calculations (Ohm's law, circuit math, conduit bending, load calculations, and similar). This is a low-hours, high-impact role: most months you'll spend a handful of hours meeting one-on-one with apprentices over Zoom and checking in by email or text between sessions.
What You'll Do
- Tutor sponsored electrical apprentices one-on-one (or in small groups) over Zoom, on an as-needed basis.
- Help apprentices build confidence and skill in algebra, and electrical theory — whatever their coursework or apprenticeship exams call for.
- Check in with apprentices between sessions via email or text to answer quick questions and keep momentum going.
- Adapt to each apprentice's schedule, background, and comfort level with math — many are adult career changers who haven't been in a classroom in years.
- Flag to the Build UP team when an apprentice seems to be struggling more broadly, so we can offer additional support.
What We're Looking For
- Required: strong, working knowledge of algebra, and the ability to explain both clearly to an adult learner.
- Required: comfort with (or willingness to quickly get comfortable with) core electrical theory math — Ohm's law, series/parallel circuits, and similar calculations used in apprenticeship coursework.
- Required: reliable access to Zoom, email, and text messaging, and the flexibility to schedule sessions around apprentices' work and class schedules.
- Required: patience, warmth, and a genuine interest in helping adult career changers succeed — many of our apprentices are rebuilding their relationship with math after years away from it.
- Preferred, not required: background as an electrician, electrical apprentice, or electrical instructor, or other hands-on experience with electrical theory. This is a real plus but isn't a dealbreaker for the right tutor.
- Preferred, not required: prior tutoring, teaching, or mentoring experience, especially with adult learners.

- Hours: approximately 5–8 hours per month, based on apprentice need — this is a flexible, part-time commitment, not a fixed schedule.
- Format: primarily one-on-one Zoom tutoring sessions, supplemented by email/text check-ins.
- Location: remote — open to candidates anywhere, though familiarity with Utah's electrical apprenticeship programs is a plus.
- Pay: $23–$28/hour, based on experience.
