The Operating Room (OR) Nurse is responsible for providing safe, effective, and efficient patient care during the perioperative period in an ambulatory surgery center setting. The OR Nurse works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes, compliance with regulatory standards, and adherence to best practices in infection control and patient safety.
The nurse will use the nursing process as a framework to guide the delivery of high quality, individualized care to patients and their families. This process
involves a series of steps that will help nurses assess patient needs, create appropriate nursing diagnosis,
plan appropriate interventions, implement care, and evaluate the outcomes. The nursing process is essential for ensuring that patient care is effective and tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Prepare the operating room with appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies for scheduled procedures.
- Verify patient identity, surgical site, and informed consent per established protocols.
- Act as a circulating nurse and or scrub nurse, ensuring aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate the safe and efficient progression of the case.
- Administer medications and monitor patients’ responses under the direction of the surgeon and anesthesia provider.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of intraoperative care, implants, and specimens and other components of medical record.
