Position Overview
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is seeking highly motivated professionals to join our growing team in a thriving community. At SCSO, we are committed to our partners, profession, and community.
Deputy Sheriffs perform general law enforcement duties to protect life and property, enforce laws, and maintain public safety. This role offers a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where no two days are the same, with opportunities to serve, lead, and grow through training, community engagement, and innovation.
Examples of Work Performed
- Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws and prevent crime
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service
- Investigate criminal activity, accidents, and complaints
- Make arrests, process prisoners, and prepare detailed reports
- Issue citations and testify in court
- Serve legal documents and civil papers
- Provide public safety services (traffic control, escorts, special events)
- Transport individuals as required (jurors, detainees, patients)
- Maintain equipment, vehicles, and required documentation
- Participate in ongoing training and maintain firearms proficiency
- Assist other agencies and departments as needed
- Remain on-call for emergency situations
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Legal U.S. citizen and resident of South Carolina
- At least twenty-one (21) years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license
- No criminal history
- Satisfactory credit history (no bankruptcy)
- Good 10-year driving record
- If prior military service, must have an honorable discharge
Additional Requirements
- Must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, extended hours, and respond during emergencies or natural disasters
- Must successfully complete all pre-employment screenings
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or higher degree (preferred)
- Certified law enforcement officer
Pre-Employment Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete:
- Credit check
- Polygraph examination
- Psychological evaluation
- Drug screening
- Physical fitness assessment

The following items must be submitted with the application packet:
- Copy of valid driver’s license
- Copy of Social Security card
- Copy of birth certificate
- Copy of high school diploma/GED and any additional degrees or certifications
- DD Form 214 (if prior military)
- Certified 10-year driving record
- T.A.B.E. test results (administered by Central Carolina Technical College; applicant responsible for scheduling)
- Detailed credit report
- Usernames and passwords for all social media accounts
- Three (3) signed letters of recommendation
Education Pay Incentives
- Associate’s Degree: +2.5% above starting salary
- Bachelor’s Degree: +5% above starting salary
- Master’s Degree: +5% above starting salary

Work Schedule
Must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, extended hours, and be available during emergencies and natural disasters.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position involves physically demanding and high-risk work. Deputies must be able to stand, walk, run, lift, and respond quickly in emergency situations. The role requires the ability to operate law enforcement equipment, including firearms, and work in stressful and potentially dangerous environments.
