About Solar States: For more than 18 years, Solar States, LLC has been a regional leader in the solar power field – both in terms of system installations and workforce development in the emerging Green Collar economy. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we have installed over 1,500 solar systems, including rooftop solar, canopies, ground mounts, carports, EV chargers, and storage solutions. We have also installed more than 10 MW of commercial solar, typically behind the meter and in the 50 kW to 1.5 MW project range. Staying true to our founding mission, we have trained over 400 new entries into the Green Collar workforce. For 16 years, Solar States has been a dominant solar services provider in the Philadelphia region, especially within the Philadelphia City limits.
Position Overview: The Commercial Construction Manager (CCM) runs field execution for Solar States' Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar projects. Working with the Director of C&I Solar, Director of Procurement, Director of Business Development and our C&I Project Managers, you'll turn permitted construction documents into finished installations — safe, on schedule, on budget, and often across several active sites at once
Safety and Compliance
● Own jobsite safety for yourself and every crew member, meeting OSHA and company standards.
● Build Site Safety Plans with the Safety Manager and Project Manager, then enforce them in the field.
● Ensure compliance with NEC, OSHA, utility, and AHJ requirements, and protect the roofing warranty throughout installation.
● Confirm material loading and staging are structurally sound, in coordination with the Structural Engineer.
Pre-construction and Procurement
● Review plans with PMs for sequencing, value engineering, and installability. Visit sites to prepare for mobilization.
● Build and review Bills of Material; receive and inventory delivered material against the PM's order list.
● Spec cranes and machinery with the PMs, develop the drop plan, and run crane day.
● Co-lead the installation kickoff meeting with PMs and crews.
Construction
● Supervise all active C&I sites, visiting each at least once a week.
● Run (or assign) Monday check-ins, daily morning huddles, and Friday look-back/look-ahead meetings; document them and report back to the PMs.
● Set and maintain standards on quality. Hold the line on scope, schedule, and budget. Build the schedule with the PMs before construction starts, staff each site to match the work, get PMs approval before any deviation from the planset, and flag drift early.
● Coordinate machine delivery and confirm operators are trained in and using equipment safely.
● Attend GC-led construction meetings and coordinate with other trades where applicable.
● Drive punch list and closeout to completion.
Team and operations
● Develop the installation crew: performance feedback, bi-annual reviews, improvement plans, tool inventory, and safety gear.
● Carry installer feedback back to the C&I Director and PMs, and help improve C&I standard operating procedures.
● Attend weekly Commercial In-Progress, Procurement, and Finance meetings.
● Document each site daily with photos, inventory, and timekeeping; arrange lodging and per diem for distant projects.
Qualifications:
Required
● Five years of construction and/or solar management experience, with a track record running multiple crews and projects simultaneously.
● Fluency reading and executing construction documents (docsets, plans, and specifications).
● An ability to produce conduit and equipment diagrams with the PMs (installation drawings) based on engineered permit and interconnection documentation.
● Experience with and comfort around C&I switchgear.
● Valid driver's license, plus use of a personal vehicle and smartphone.
● Ability to obtain Pennsylvania school district clearances (Acts 34, 151, 114, 168, and 24), which are required for work on school sites.
● Ability to do the hands-on work of a Commercial Installer and operate machinery listed below.
● Safety certifications: OSHA 30-Hour Construction, NFPA 70E, First Aid / CPR / AED.
Preferred
● Certified Master Electrician or Licensed Electrical Contractor in Pennsylvania.
● Machine certifications: OSHA telehandler / rough-terrain forklift, forklift operator, MEWP, aerial lift.
● Familiarity with macOS.
