Under the direct supervision of the building principal, assistant principal and bilingual teacher, the bilingual aide assists the bilingual teacher in meeting the educational needs of students who have limited command of the English language and/or do not have English as their primary language.
- Must have a valid Illinois paraprofessional approval letter.
- A valid Illinois teacher certificate is preferred, but not required.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with staff and students and the ability to work as a team member.
- Knowledge of foreign language and familiarity with other cultures preferred.
- Demonstrates organizational skills, efficiency, cooperation and self-direction.
- Must have oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Under the direct supervision of the bilingual teacher, assists the bilingual teacher to plan and teach lessons in a variety of subjects to small groups of bilingual students and/or individual bilingual students.
- Assists bilingual students in understanding social and cultural mores of American society.
- Provides reinforcement of individual or groups of bilingual students of direct material initially taught by the bilingual teacher.
- Responsible for guiding any independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up by the bilingual teacher.
- Creates and adapts appropriate instructional materials for bilingual students as needed.
- Assists the bilingual teacher with preparing instructional materials, making copies, classroom displays and bulletin boards.
- Under the direct supervision of the bilingual teacher, administers student assessments to determine eligibility for the bilingual program and to track student progress.
- Provides input for bilingual student report cards.
- Assists with escorting students from the bus to their classroom.
- Accompanies students to special area classes as needed.
- Participates in collaborative planning for instruction with the classroom teacher.
- Sets up and operates audiovisual equipment.
- Attends District and/or school meetings, when necessary or appropriate.
- Supervises students in the playground, lunchroom, buses and other non-instructional areas as required and requested by the building principal, assistant principal and bilingual teacher.
- Serves as a substitute teacher for absent teachers when assigned, and if appropriately certified.
- Interfaces with all levels of staff within the school building.
- Performs other related duties as may be necessary and assigned by the building principal, assistant principal and bilingual teacher.
