What You’ll Do
The Drug & Alcohol Counselor provides substance abuse counseling services and comprehensive case management support to assigned clients. This role includes conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, providing counseling services, and coordinating care to support client recovery goals.
Your responsibilities may include:
Clinical Counseling & Treatment:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine client needs and treatment goals
- Utilize ASAM placement criteria and DSM diagnostic standards to support treatment planning
- Develop individualized, recovery-focused treatment plans
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions
- Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as needed
- Provide education, support, and coping strategies to clients
Documentation & Compliance:
- Complete clinical documentation accurately and timely according to regulatory standards
- Maintain confidential client records and electronic health records
- Enter required information into NJSAMS and electronic documentation systems
- Prepare discharge summaries and clinical reports
- Follow agency policies, state regulations, and best practice standards
Care Coordination:
- Provide case management services and referrals based on client needs
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, community resources, and treatment partners
- Support clients in accessing appropriate services and resources
- Participate in quality improvement activities

Qualifications
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Addiction Studies, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field
Required Experience:
- Three years of experience in the substance abuse treatment field preferred
- Experience working with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and behavioral health needs
Licensure Preferred:
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical assessment and documentation skills
- Knowledge of addiction treatment services and counseling practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with clients
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams
Additional Requirements:
- Must successfully complete Physical & Drug Screening (including THC)
- Must complete required trainings
- Must pass Criminal Record History Clearance, FBI, and Child Abuse History Clearance
- Must pass required federal and state background screenings
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to meet physical requirements including sitting, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, climbing stairs, and driving as needed
