Freedom Boat Club Austin is looking for friendly, professional US Coast Guard licensed Captains to help train and onboard new club members at our Lake Austin and Lake Travis locations.
Job Overview
The US Coast Guard Captain / Instructor plays a key role in creating safe, professional, and enjoyable boating experiences for our members. This part-time position includes virtual classroom review, on-the-water training, member support, captained outings for members, and occasional assistance with club operations.
We are looking for customer-focused Captains who are comfortable working around boats, docks, members, and marina environments. Flexible availability is needed, including weekdays and weekends as scheduled.

Responsibilities
- Greet and welcome new members
- Conduct member classroom reviews of training videos, club policies, safety procedures, and compliance requirements
- Provide on-the-water training on various boats and skill areas
- Perform captained outings for members
- Identify areas where additional training may be needed or beneficial
- Record training credentials in the reservation system
- Maintain a calm, positive, and professional attitude during busy periods
- Provide red-carpet-level service to members and guests
- Handle minor member mishaps or incidents while maintaining a friendly and professional disposition
- Speak with prospective members about the club when needed
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures
- Maintain a professional appearance and wear required uniform
- Assist with additional duties as assigned
Requirements
Certain skills and experience are required, while others can be developed along the way.
- US Coast Guard Captain’s License required
- Must pass a background check and drug screen
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Boating experience required
- Previous instructor experience is highly desirable
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Friendly, customer-service-focused attitude
- Professional communication with members, co-workers, supervisors, and management
- Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated
- High attention to detail
- Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and basic electronic systems
- Vision adequate to read and operate handheld tablets or devices
- Ability to maintain a cooperative, team-oriented attitude
- Ability to oversee member outings professionally while maintaining high safety standards
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Work in a marina setting on fixed and floating docks
- Work near, on, and around the water
- Move safely between docks and boats, including unstable or wet surfaces
- Navigate drops of approximately 4 feet from dock to vessel and back
- Work outdoors in heat, rain, cold, and other weather conditions
- Stand for long periods of time
- Safely move on, off, and inside vessels during varying dock, lake, and weather conditions
