Definition of Class
Under direct supervision of the Chief County Detective, but, is ultimately responsible to the District Attorney for
investigation and assistance in prosecution of all criminal cases in Erie County. Responsible for completion of
all criminal investigations as assigned by the Chief County Detective.
ADVANCEMENT: Automatic promotion to Class "B" Detective after 12 months.
Nature of Work
Full-time 40 hours/week
County Detectives are sworn law enforcement officers with countywide jurisdiction.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conducts criminal investigations of violations of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code and Vehicle Code occurring in
the County of Erie. Coordinates and calls victims/witnesses for criminal trials. Assists other police agencies at
direction of the District Attorney and or the Chief County Detective. Handles extraditions and prisoner
transports. Schedules preliminary hearings. Assists in covert and overt criminal investigations. Assists the
District Attorney personnel in the completion and accuracy of investigations as they pertain to court
prosecutions. Assists in the coordination and running of the trial list. Investigates and handles private
complaints. Participates in the DUI Roadblock Program and the Drug Enforcement Program as directed.
Performs related duties and assignments as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Must have a thorough knowledge of law enforcement functions. Working knowledge of criminal and motor
vehicles codes and Rules of Criminal Procedure. Ability to articulate well. Good judgment, maturity, integrity
and reliability. Ability to retain confidentiality to the highest degree. Should be physically able to function in law
enforcement. Computer literate.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, Criminal Justice, Political Science or related field/or combination of education and prior law enforcement experience.
Must be Act 120 Certified
Must be Proficient in the Use of Firearms
Must have a Valid Driver's License
Basic Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office
Must pass a thorough background check including child abuse clearances.
