A leading global manufacturer and distributor within the consumer goods industry is seeking a Director of Transportation to lead and optimize transportation operations across a multi-region network, including international markets.This executive-level role will be responsible for developing and executing strategic transportation and logistics plans that improve service performance, drive cost efficiency, and enhance operational visibility. The Director will oversee private fleet operations, carrier relationships, and third-party logistics partners while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.This is a highly cross-functional leadership role partnering with executive leadership, manufacturing, distribution, procurement, and customer service teams to support business growth, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute transportation strategies across domestic and international regions, including Europe
- Oversee private fleet, common carriers, and 3PL/4PL relationships to maximize service and cost efficiency
- Own and manage transportation budgets, including variance analysis and corrective action planning
- Drive carrier selection, performance management, and contract negotiations
- Lead and develop transportation teams, setting performance goals and tracking progress
- Partner cross-functionally to support supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution initiatives
- Build KPI reporting frameworks to improve cost visibility and service performance tracking
- Optimize transportation systems (TMS) for shipment tracking, planning, and reporting
- Oversee fleet operations including acquisition, maintenance, scheduling, and asset lifecycle management
- Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, and applicable international transportation regulations
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service levels and reduce costs
- Manage customer communications related to transportation performance and service issues
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Operations, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 10+ years of transportation or logistics leadership experience in North America (U.S./Canada)
- 5+ years of private fleet management experience
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and cost optimization initiatives
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred), WMS, and Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
- Proven experience managing multi-site operations (manufacturing plants and distribution centers)
- Strong understanding of DOT, OSHA, and regulatory compliance requirements
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Strong organizational and project management abilities

- Experience supporting European transportation operations or international logistics compliance
- Retail or consumer goods distribution experience
- Experience negotiating large-scale carrier agreements and freight optimization strategies
- Exposure to 3PL/4PL network design and optimization
Pay: $170,000.00 - $218,000.00 per year
