Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and safety-conscious Extraction Technician to operate closed-loop BHO/hydrocarbon extraction systems, perform post-processing (purging, whipping, filtering, winterization, distillation support), and maintain full compliance with CA Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC/DCC), Cal/OSHA, and local fire code (CUPA/Fire Marshal) requirements. This role requires hands-on technical skill, meticulous documentation, and unwavering commitment to lab safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Extraction Operations
Operate closed-loop hydrocarbon (butane/propane) extraction systems to produce BHO and related concentrates in accordance with SOPs
Load, purge, and recover solvent using certified closed-loop equipment; monitor pressure, temperature, and flow throughout runs
Perform material weigh-ins, chain-of-custody logging, and yield tracking for each batch (METRC compliance)
Troubleshoot equipment issues (valves, gaskets, pumps, vacuum ovens) and coordinate repairs/maintenance with equipment vendors
Post-Processing
Purge crude oil in vacuum ovens to remove residual solvent to compliant PPM levels
Perform whipping, budder/badder agitation, and temperature-controlled purging for various product textures (shatter, wax, badder, sauce, live resin)
Conduct winterization, filtration, and dewaxing as needed for further refinement
Support distillation, dilution, or filling operations for downstream products (carts, edibles) as applicable
Package, label, and stage finished product per packaging SOPs and state track-and-trace requirements
Safety & Compliance
Strictly adhere to Cal/OSHA process safety management (PSM) and hazardous materials handling procedures
Operate exclusively within C1D1/C1D2-rated extraction booths; monitor LEL (lower explosive limit) sensors and gas detection systems continuously
Wear and maintain all required PPE (flame-resistant clothing, chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses/goggles, respirators as needed)
Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for equipment maintenance
Maintain proper ventilation, grounding/bonding of equipment, and static discharge precautions when handling flammable solvents
Participate in mandatory fire safety, HazMat, and emergency response training (spill response, evacuation procedures, first aid/CPR)
Complete and maintain accurate safety data sheets (SDS) access logs, hazardous materials inventory statements (HMIS), and CUPA-required documentation
Immediately report equipment malfunctions, near-misses, or safety incidents to management per incident reporting protocol
Maintain a clean, organized lab space free of ignition sources, unauthorized personnel, and unnecessary hazardous material accumulation
Ensure compliance with local Fire Marshal permits and annual inspections
Documentation & Quality
Maintain detailed batch records, extraction logs, and yield reports for regulatory audits
Support third-party lab testing coordination (potency, residual solvents, pesticides, microbials)
Assist in maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and updating them as processes improve
Participate in internal audits and BCC/DCC compliance inspections
Required Qualifications
Minimum 1–2 years of hands-on experience operating closed-loop BHO/hydrocarbon extraction equipment
Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations related to flammable solvent handling and PSM
Familiarity with METRC or equivalent track-and-trace systems
Understanding of C1D1/C1D2 electrical classifications and why they matter in extraction environments
Ability to read and interpret SDS sheets and hazardous materials documentation
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict SOPs without deviation
Must be 21 years of age or older
Must pass a background check per state cannabis licensing requirements
Must be able to obtain/maintain any required state worker permits or badges
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with rosin press, distillation (short-path/wiped-film), or vacuum oven purging
HazMat handling certification or OSHA 10/30 certification
Experience with vacuum pumps, chillers, and recovery pump systems
Prior experience in a licensed cannabis manufacturing facility
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field (preferred, not required)
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a temperature-controlled lab environment
Ability to wear PPE, including respirators, for extended shifts
Manual dexterity for fine post-processing work (whipping, packaging)
Work Environment
This role involves regular exposure to flammable solvents (butane/propane) in a controlled, ventilated, and monitored C1D1/C1D2-rated extraction booth. Employees must strictly follow all safety protocols at all times. Zero tolerance for safety violations, including smoking/vaping near extraction areas, bypassing gas detection systems, or working without required PPE.
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
