Who We Are
Downrite Engineering is an established underground utility and sitework contractor delivering deep sanitary sewer, water main, and storm drainage systems across South Florida. Our crews build the infrastructure behind residential communities, logistics parks, and commercial developments. We are looking for a dependable, safety-focused team member to join our pipe crews.
The Role
The Hillman / Tailman works the top of the trench and keeps the operation flowing. You'll handle and rig materials at the edge, hook and unhook pipe for the operator, signal the machine, pass tools and supplies to the pipe layer, and help with grade, backfill, and cleanup. It's a key support role and a strong entry point to grow into pipe laying or equipment operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle, rig, hook, and unhook pipe, structures, and materials at the top of the trench.
- Signal and spot the excavator operator; keep personnel clear of the swing radius.
- Pass pipe, fittings, tools, and supplies down to the pipe layer in the trench.
- Help prepare bedding, place backfill, and assist with grade and compaction.
- Keep the trench edge, laydown area, and work zone clean, organized, and safe.
- Assist with locating, exposing, and protecting existing utilities.
- Support testing, cleanup, and general crew tasks as directed by the foreman.
- Follow all trench-safety rules and use required personal protective equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Reliable, hardworking, and willing to learn the trade.
- Able to follow directions and work as part of a fast-moving crew.
- Awareness of jobsite and trench-area safety (or willingness to be trained).
- Dependable transportation and a strong attendance record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience on underground utility / pipe crews or general construction.
- Basic rigging and hand-signal experience.
- OSHA 10 awareness.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
- Interest in advancing to pipe layer or equipment operator.
Physical Requirements
- Able to perform physical labor in South Florida heat and weather year-round.
- Able to lift, carry, and maneuver pipe, fittings, and materials repeatedly.
- Comfortable working at the edge of open trenches around heavy equipment.

Pay: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour
