Trailers Inc. is an independent, owner-operated trailer dealership based in Cairo, New York, serving contractors, landscapers, farms, municipalities, and retail customers across the Hudson Valley and Catskills for the past 33 years. We sell, service, and stock parts for utility, dump, enclosed, car hauler, and equipment trailers — including Aluma, Belmont, CAM Superline, Durabull, N&N, Nordtek, and PACE American — along with related equipment.

Mechanic — Trailer Service & Repair
Trailers Inc. | Cairo, NY | Full-Time | $48,000 – $68,000/year plus incentive pay
Trailers Inc. is hiring an experienced Mechanic to work in our service shop. This is the senior wrench position in the building — you diagnose the jobs nobody else can figure out, you sign off on the work of a general service technician before it goes to the customer, and you set the standard as an experienced professional in the shop.
We are an independent, owner-operated trailer dealership and a New York State licensed inspection station. Our shop services utility, dump, enclosed, car hauler, and equipment trailers, plus dump-bed inserts, across the brands we stock — Aluma, Belmont, Durabull, N&N, Nordtek, and PACE American. Because we run Sales, Service, and Parts under one roof, the bays stay full year-round.
What you'll do
Technical diagnostics and repair (35% of the role)
- Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, braking, suspension, coupler, and lighting systems on trailers and dump-body inserts
- Perform DOT and New York State inspections
- Complete brake, bearing, tire, and axle service to manufacturer specification
- Document diagnostic findings, parts used, and labor time on every repair order
Shop leadership and quality control (20%)
- Assign and prioritize repair orders based on customer commitments, general service technician skill, and parts availability
- Mentor General Service Technicians on repair procedures, tool use, and safety
- Perform final QC sign-off on completed repairs, pre-delivery inspections (PDI), and warranty work
- Escalate recurring quality or supplier issues to the General Manager and Parts / Shop Manager
Safety, compliance, and warranty (15%)
- Enforce OSHA, PPE, lift-and-jackstand, and lock-out / tag-out procedures
- Maintain compliance with NYS inspection station standards and federal DOT trailer regulations
- Prepare accurate warranty claim documentation
Customer experience and operational support (30%)
- Explain technical findings to customers in plain language and help de-escalate repair-cost or warranty concerns
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, time, and material usage
- Participate in training and certification courses and help train new personnel
What we're looking for
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing trailers, heavy equipment, diesel, or automotive systems
- NYS Motor Vehicle Inspector certification — held now, or attainable within 90 days (we pay for it)
- Valid NYS driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record
- MIG welding, torch cutting, and light fabrication experience
- Ability to read trailer wiring and hydraulic schematics
- Comfort with hand tools, power tools, torque wrenches, and diagnostic meters (multimeter, brake controller tester)
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs routinely and 100 lbs occasionally with assistance; stand, kneel, crouch, and work under trailers for extended periods
Preferred
- Post-secondary diploma or associate degree in Diesel, Heavy-Equipment, or Automotive Technology
- CDL Class A or B; NATM Trailer Tech certification
- Experience with electric-over-hydraulic brake systems and pintle / gooseneck coupler service
- Familiarity with dealer management systems and digital repair-order platforms
- Prior experience leading or mentoring a small technician team
How success is measured
You'll know exactly what's expected. This role is measured on three things: diagnostic accuracy of 95% or better (no comebacks within 30 days), billable-hour efficiency of 90% or better on a rolling 90-day average, and closing 90% of standard repair orders within 5 business days and 100% of DOT inspections within 2 business days. Reviews at 30, 60, and 90 days, then annually.
