Overview
The Inspector is responsible for performing field inspections, risk assessments, and pre-sales evaluations of water and wastewater infrastructure. This role blends technical inspection expertise with customer-facing sales support, ensuring assets meet compliance standards while identifying opportunities for repair, maintenance, and project work.
The Inspector plays a critical role in prospecting, supporting business development efforts, and maintaining client relationships, while also ensuring quality, safety, and operational excellence across projects.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Inspection, Risk & Technical Responsibilities
- Perform inspections, condition assessments, and risk evaluations of tanks and infrastructure
- Identify deficiencies, non-compliance issues, and structural concerns and provide prioritized recommendations
- Conduct safety audits and ensure compliance with AWWA, OSHA, and other applicable standards
- Evaluate corrosion, coatings, and structural integrity; recommend repair and preservation solutions
- Support development of scopes of work, technical specifications, bids, RFPs, and RFQs
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, technical documentation, and presentations
Project & Quality Support
- Assist with project coordination and construction administration activities
- Ensure work meets company and customer expectations for quality and safety
- Maintain daily logs, reports, and photo documentation in company systems
- Collaborate with crews and service centers to support successful project execution
- Schedule and manage inspection coverage across assigned territory
Sales & Prospecting Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-sales inspections and site evaluations to support business development
- Identify and communicate new project opportunities based on inspection findings
- Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective customers
- Partner with Sales and Operations teams to develop solutions and proposals
- Participate in client meetings and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations
- Serve as a technical advisor to customers, helping them understand asset conditions and next steps
Education/Experience Requirements
- Strong knowledge of inspection methods, corrosion, coatings, and structural systems
- Understanding of water/wastewater infrastructure, treatment systems, and construction practices
- Familiarity with AWWA, OSHA, API, and other regulatory standards
- Ability to translate technical findings into clear, customer-friendly recommendations
- Strong communication and presentation skills (internal and external audiences)
- Sales acumen with the ability to identify opportunities and support business growth
- Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a field-based environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and reporting systems
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 3+ years of inspection or related field experience (advanced roles may require 7–10+ years)
- Experience in water tank construction, blasting, coatings, or repair
- NACE/AMPP Certification (Level 1+ preferred; higher levels a plus)
- OSHA safety training required (10–30 hour depending on experience level)
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred
Work Environment & Requirements
- Extensive travel (up to ~80%), including overnight stays
- Ability to climb structures exceeding 200 feet and work in confined spaces
- Ability to carry up to 60 lbs. of equipment
- Frequent driving and field-based work across multiple job sites
