Performs responsible skilled work repairing and maintaining a variety of makes and models of automobiles, heavy equipment, trucks and other municipal automotive equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, traffic conditions and oils.
Essential Functions/Typical Task:
Performing routine automotive/truck and equipment repairs, changing tires; checking oil and fluids; replacing filters; lubricating equipment; securing parts;
- Checks all fluid levels in assigned vehicles and bring to proper level; drains air tanks;
- Performs preventive maintenance, changes fluids and filters;
- Checks and replaces non-working lights; checks and cleans battery;
- Alerts supervisor of problems with vehicle;
- Steam cleans vehicles as needed;
- Performs light mechanical work on vehicle; replaces mirrors, belts, tires, battery, etc.;
- Assists with road calls; replaces sweeper brooms;
- Obtains parts; organize and oversee filter quantities
- Keeps garage clean and in an orderly condition; washes vehicles;
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Installs and removes snowplows and salters, replaces plow cutting edges
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of engine and chassis units and general repair work practices; general knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of gasoline and diesel engines; general knowledge of the safety hazardous associated with the work and the necessary safety precautions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to small engines, construction (heavy) equipment and automotive equipment; ability to keep repair records on equipment; skill in the use of shop tools and machinery; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in automotive repair and/or considerable experience in repairing automotive equipment.
Special Requirements:
General welding preferred. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s license valid in the state of Ohio with air brake endorsement (Class A preferred).

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
