Underground Construction Laborer – North Carolina
Position Overview
CDL Utilities has an immediate opening for a skilled and dependable Underground Construction Laborer to support our growing operations throughout North Carolina. This position plays a critical role in supporting ongoing underground utility construction projects while also responding to emergency restoration and outage response efforts as needed.
We are seeking hard-working individuals with underground utility construction experience who are capable of working extended hours and occasional weekends during emergency situations or to meet project demands. The work is primarily performed outdoors, and candidates must be comfortable working in varying weather conditions.
This position will primarily support projects throughout North Carolina. The ideal candidate has experience installing and maintaining underground telecommunications and/or electrical infrastructure, including fiber optic systems.

Essential Responsibilities
- Participate in all phases of underground utility construction, including the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications and electrical infrastructure.
- Support ongoing construction projects and emergency restoration efforts, including storm response and outage recovery activities.
- Hand dig using shovels and mechanical tools in an ergonomically safe manner.
- Assist with locating, exposing, and protecting existing underground utilities.
- Perform traffic control functions, including setting up work zones, placing traffic control devices, and directing traffic under the supervision of a Crew Leader.
- Load, unload, clean, and maintain tools, equipment, and job sites.
- Ensure all equipment and tools are properly maintained, cleaned, and stored.
- Maintain safe work practices and comply with all company policies, procedures, and applicable safety regulations.
- Work collaboratively with crew members, supervisors, customers, and utility representatives.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening, criminal background checks, and DMV record checks.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of underground utility construction experience required.
- Experience digging trenches and working around concrete and asphalt surfaces required.
- Experience in telecommunications, fiber optic, electrical, or other underground utility construction preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with Crew Leaders, customers, and team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability and willingness to travel as required, including overnight travel and extended assignments based on project and emergency response needs.
- Ability and willingness to work nights, weekends, and extended hours during emergency restoration events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience within the telecommunications industry and knowledge of safe excavation practices.
- Experience reading construction prints, utility maps, and locates.
- Previous storm restoration or emergency response experience.
- Ability to speak and/or read both English and Spanish.
- Leadership ability and strong communication skills.
- Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and lifting throughout the workday.
- Ability to work while wearing required personal protective equipment, including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and high-visibility apparel.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
