A family in Bel Air is seeking an energetic, patient, and tech-savvy AAC Communication Partner and Homework Assistant for a bright, nonspeaking pre-teen who communicates using a Tobii eye-gaze device.
This is a part-time, in-home position for one to two weekday afternoons per week, approximately two to three hours per visit between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Weekend hours may be available ,as well.
You will support the child with homework, reading, self-expression, and communication-based activities. Familiarity with Tobii devices is not required—we will provide training on the device, its programs, and creating communication and learning materials.
This could be a wonderful opportunity for someone interested in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), speech and language, special education, occupational therapy, behavioral health, or supporting children with learning differences.
The ideal candidate is reliable, patient, encouraging, and enthusiastic about helping a young person communicate, learn, and become more independent. We welcome candidates who are curious and eager to learn, even if they do not yet have direct experience with a Tobii device.

Core Responsibilities
- Support homework, reading, and other learning activities.
- Serve as an engaged and respectful communication partner.
- Encourage use of the child’s Tobii eye-gaze AAC device throughout activities and everyday conversation.
- Allow sufficient processing and response time while presuming competence and respecting the child’s choices.
- Collaborate with the child’s speech-language pathologist to implement recommended AAC strategies.
- Learn to use the Tobii device, relevant programs, and communication materials.
- Help create or adapt learning and communication materials as needed.
- Communicate clearly with the family, educators, therapists, and other members of the child’s support team.
- Build a positive, dependable, and encouraging relationship with an amazing kid.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Experience supporting AAC users, nonspeaking individuals, or people with complex communication needs is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Tobii eye-gaze devices is a plus but is not required.
- Background in, or current study of, special education, speech and language, occupational therapy, behavioral health, psychology, education, or a related field is helpful.
- Experience supporting children or individuals with cognitive, intellectual, developmental, or learning disabilities in home, school, or community settings is a plus.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Patience, reliability, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in learning about AAC.
- Ability to respect the child’s autonomy, communication style, and processing time.
Training will be provided. More than anything, we are looking for someone who is dependable, engaged, excited to learn, and committed to helping a young AAC user develop confidence and expand their communication.
Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
