Role Overview
As a Firewood Splitter, you will be responsible for transforming raw logs into high-quality, ready-to-burn firewood for residential and commercial customers. This is a physically demanding role that requires operating heavy equipment, handling large logs, and maintaining a safe, organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate high-volume hydraulic log splitters and wood processors to break down hardwood and softwood logs into consistent, sellable sizes.
- Safely and proficiently use industrial-grade chainsaws to buck oversized or awkwardly shaped logs into manageable lengths.
- Load heavy logs and rounds onto the splitter’s feeding mechanism, either manually or with mechanical equipment like log lifts or skid steers.
- Manage the outfeed of split wood, guiding it onto conveyor belts or into designated sorting bins for seasoning and storage.
- Stack split firewood neatly and securely in bays or on pallets, ensuring proper airflow for drying and maximizing yard space.
- Perform and document routine pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance on all processing equipment (greasing fittings, checking hydraulic fluid, cleaning air filters).
- Maintain a clean, organized work area by clearing debris, sawdust, and bark.
- Identify and sort different wood species (e.g., oak, maple, birch, ash) according to company standards and customer orders.
- Assess log quality, discarding pieces with excessive rot, disease, or pests to maintain product standards.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, wearing and maintaining required PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, chaps, hearing protection).
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in operating hydraulic log splitters and chainsaws.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to lift heavy logs.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment maintenance.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Teamwork and ability to follow safety procedures.
Pay: $16.00 - $22.00 per hour
