Gulf Coast Pathologists is developing a proprietary Laboratory Information System (LIS) and is hiring a single senior, full-time hybrid specialist to own three connected functions: (1) hardening and securing the lab's on-premises server and local network/domain, (2) architecting and managing HIPAA-appropriate cloud infrastructure, and (3) leading day-to-day software development on the in-house LIS, whether personally coding, managing contractors, or both. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities, not a pure management position — the lab is a small organization and this role is expected to be doing and directing the work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Local Infrastructure & Security
- Harden and maintain the lab's on-premises server(s), including OS patching, endpoint protection, and access control.
- Secure the local domain and network: firewall configuration, VLAN segmentation between clinical/LIS systems and general office IT, VPN setup for remote access.
- Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity procedures for on-prem systems handling PHI.
- Own the local component of the HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis and remediation plan, and maintain required documentation.
- Manage physical security controls relevant to IT (server room access, device inventory, media disposal).
B. Cloud Infrastructure
- Design and stand up cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) for the LIS and any supporting services, with a HIPAA-eligible service architecture and Business Associate Agreements in place with the chosen provider.
- Implement encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, identity and access management, and network security (VPC design, security groups) for all cloud-hosted components.
- Set up monitoring, alerting, and cost management for cloud resources.
- Plan and execute a hybrid architecture connecting on-prem lab instruments/systems to cloud-hosted application layers where appropriate.
C. LIS Software Development Leadership
- Lead architecture and technical decision-making for the in-house LIS, including database design for specimen tracking, results, and reporting.
- Either write code directly or manage contract/junior developers who do, depending on team composition as it evolves.
- Implement or oversee interoperability standards (HL7v2, FHIR) for interfacing with EHRs, reference labs, and ordering systems.
- Establish software development practices appropriate for a clinical system: version control, change control, validation/testing procedures, and documentation sufficient to support CLIA and (if applicable) CAP requirements.
- Manage the development roadmap and prioritize features against regulatory deadlines and lab operational needs.
