The City of Phoenix Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) operates shelters, safe outdoor spaces, service centers, and support facilities that require responsive, skilled, and proactive maintenance. The Building Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring these sites remain safe, functional, compliant, and operational with minimal interruptions. This position supports OHS program operations by independently managing maintenance needs, coordinating repairs, and reducing the operational load on Project Managers.
The Building Maintenance Worker performs skilled-level maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and project coordination across OHS sites. In addition to hands-on technical work, the technician supports planning, documentation, and contractor oversight to help streamline project workflows. Key responsibilities include:

Performing daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work across multiple OHS facilities, including the Safe Outdoor Space, shelters, and administrative buildings.

Conducting preventive and corrective maintenance for plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, and general building systems.

Installing, repairing, and maintaining doors, frames, hinges, locks, closures, automatic door openers, and access control hardware.

Performing backflow device inspections, basic repairs, coordination with certified testers, and ensuring devices remain compliant with City and State requirements.

Troubleshooting HVAC systems, performing basic repairs, conducting filter changes, and using multimeters and diagnostic tools to identify issues.

Managing plumbing issues including fixture replacement, drain clearing, water heater troubleshooting, and sewage backup response.

Performing construction-related tasks including metal framing, drywall installation and patching, taping, texturing, and painting interior/exterior surfaces.

Conducting routine inspections of all OHS sites, identifying deficiencies, and initiating corrective actions without requiring Project Manager direction.

Coordinating directly with Public Works, vendors, and contractors for specialized repairs and installations.

Overseeing onsite contractors to ensure scopes of work are followed, safety is maintained, and timelines are met reporting status updates back to the Project Manager.

Assisting with estimating material needs, procuring supplies, and ensuring cost effective purchasing.

Completing timely and accurate documentation, including work orders, inspection reports, site condition assessments, vendor logs, and repair histories.

Serving as a point of contact for facility-related emergencies, ensuring rapid response to minimize program disruptions.

Leading small work groups or crews as assigned.
