Job Summary
We need another great teacher!
I-5 Driving School, South King County's friendliest driving school, is looking for a new driving instructor. This position is best suited for a friendly, detail-oriented, and self-motivated person who wants to help teach people become successful and confident drivers. If you are looking for work where you can genuinely help people, you will find this is quite a fulfilling job.
We are committed to providing a better experience for our customers, and that philosophy has made us very busy. We would prefer not to have to turn customers away, and we need two more instructors to help us maintain our high level of quality. Unlike many driving schools, we work full-time, year-round (not just in the summers). If you speak a second language fluently, please be sure to mention it on your resume!
We provide the state-required 100 hours of training for you to get your Washington State driving instructor's license, and you'll need to pass a state written and drive examination, and we will help you prepare (the vast majority pass on the first try).
All of our instructors have the choice of what areas they like to work on; some like teaching the classes, some only want to instruct in the car, some prefer to conduct the driver license exams, and many of them like a mix of all these things. We'll find a balance that works for you!
WHAT WE OFFER
- Full-time and/or part-time available, 20 to 45 hours per week (up to you)
- Work at our Auburn location.
- Flexible times available, but the preferred schedule is roughly 12pm-8pm Tue-Fri, and Sat 10am-4pm. Saturdays are required, but can start earlier or end later.
- Behind-the-wheel driving lessons, primarily,
- We provide the car, and yes, there is a brake on the passenger side :)
- $25 per hour to start, with hourly rate add-ons as you add skills (teach classes, offer driver license tests, administrative work, etc.), plus annual cost-of-living increases. If you also speak Spanish and English fluently, we start at $29 per hour.
- Very friendly work environment and co-workers
Responsibilities and Duties
A driving instructor typically conducts 1-hour driving lessons for beginner teen drivers, and adults learning to drive for the first time. It sounds scary at first, but after a few weeks of training you begin to see driving in a new way, and it becomes quite routine. Instructors have a brake pedal on their side of the car if needed, and you can grab the wheel quite easily in our small cars. Grabbing the wheel is pretty rare though, since you have already told them to steer away from the upcoming danger. Even then, you typically just hold the wheel to prevent someone from making a bad lane change or turn.
Some instructors also like to teach the classes, which is fairly easy to do, but does require enthusiasm for teaching. Our curriculum is very well structured, and you aren't required to create lesson plans. The PowerPoint presentations are excellent, not boring, and make it easy to follow along.
We also offer the official state knowledge and driving exams, and instructors can choose to proctor the written tests (simply grading papers), and/or conduct state driving tests. Some instructors prefer to only offer license exams, and that is certainly an option.
