We are seeking a Food Safety Specialist to join our team! Our ideal candidate understands the warehouse/distribution industry and has enthusiasm for quality foods, loves working in a fast-paced environment, and strives to build and maintain excellent partnerships with vendors and customers.
The Food Safety Specialist oversees food safety programs, ensures compliance with the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Safe Quality Foods SQF audit (SQF) and local regulations. This person will be tasked with conducting audits, training staff, managing the HACCP/SQF systems, and leading corrective actions found during audits. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all food handling, preparation, and storage meet regulatory and safety standards. They maintain compliance, train employees, and manage food safety systems such as HACCP and SQF.
This position will be based in Vineland, NJ and the Specialist will be expected to travel to the Florence, NJ location on a regular basis.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to FDA, USDA, SQF, and local health regulations.
- Maintain permits, certifications, and required documentation.
- Prepare for and respond to health inspections.
Food Safety Program Management:
Oversee sanitation schedules, temperature monitoring, allergen controls, and pest management.
- Lead SQF/HARPC compliance and third‑party audit readiness.
Training & Leadership:
- Train staff on food safety procedures, hygiene, and SOPs.
- Provide technical training on pest control, operational methods, and cleaning practices.
- Communicate food safety expectations across departments.
Inspections, Audits & Corrective Actions:
- Conduct regular internal audits and facility inspections.
- Investigate complaints and implement corrective actions.
- Manage food recall procedures when necessary.
- Complete mock recalls two times annually
Reporting & Documentation:
- Prepare reports on audits, incidents, and compliance trends.
- Document deviations and follow up on corrective actions.
- Maintain manuals, SOPs, and inspection criteria.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology, biology, or related field preferred.
- Certifications: HACCP, ANAB-accredited Food Protection Manager (e.g., ServSafe), SQF Practitioner, PCQI (as required).
- 3–5 years of experience in food safety or quality assurance; supervisory experience often required.
Essential Skills:
- Knowledge of food microbiology, food defense, GMPs, and regulatory standards.
- Strong communication, auditing, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement.
