This Driver License Examiner work involves the administration of examinations to applicants for Class A, B, C, motorcycle, and school bus driver licenses. Responsibilities include administering road skill, written/oral tests, vision screening, and road evaluations to those deemed to have medical conditions requiring further review. Work activity may be performed outside in all types of weather, including inclement rain/snow conditions or excessive heat. Work is performed under limited supervision.

- Conducts pre-trip vehicle evaluations and administers driving skills tests.
- Administers and scores road skills tests for Class A, B, and C vehicles, motorcycles, and school buses, as well as special examinations for physically challenged and/or adverse driving applicants.
- Administers and scores written and oral examinations on traffic laws and explains test results, as necessary, to determine an applicant’s knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
- Administers vision screening examinations to determine an applicant’s visual acuity for issuance of an operator’s license or permit.
- Operates digital photo licensing equipment to issue driver’s licenses and state identification cards.
- Applies and explains applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to individuals applying for licensure.
- Operates electronic tablets and desktop software used to administer, score, and record examination results.
- Answers inquiries from the public and provides accurate information to applicants regarding driver licensing requirements and procedures.
- Cleans, services, restocks, and maintains testing equipment, forms, supply kits, vehicles, and other issued materials to ensure they are in good operating condition and available for use.
- Investigates adverse reports regarding an individual’s ability to drive and administers related driving skills tests to help safeguard the public.
Comfort learning and adopting new technologies, experience streamlining or digitizing paper-based work, clear written communication, curiosity about emerging workplace tools, and the judgment to evaluate and verify their output before relying on it.
Preferred qualification would include successful completion of Maine BMV’s examiner training, possession of a valid International Driver Examiner Certification (IDEC) and/or Certified Commercial Knowledge Examiner (CCKE) certification.
(Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).
Two (2) years of work experience affording public contact, knowledge of Maine motor vehicle Laws and regulations, and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Please note that this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or STEM OPT extensions, and successful candidates will be required to complete an I-9 form upon hire.
The successful candidate must pass a National Criminal Background check, which may include fingerprinting.
