DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class performs maintenance and repair work in the efficient accomplishment of semi-skilled plumbing work at a wastewater treatment plant, tributary pump station and/or on the municipal wastewater distribution system. Some clerical functions may be performed in addition to building and grounds maintenance work on municipal facilities. The work is performed under general supervision. This class if distinguished from that of Wastewater Maintenance Person II by the lack of supervisory responsibilities, type of equipment to be maintained, and the size and organizational structure of the municipality. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Replaces packings in pumps and valves, lubricates equipment and checks for equipment malfunction;
2. Assists in or is responsible for the disassembly and re-assembly of pumps, motors valves, and other related equipment;
3. Performs maintenance on wastewater interceptor lines, including, but not limited to, repair of manholes and pipes and cleaning of pipes; assists in the installation of new and replacement equipment;
4. Assists in the servicing of mechanical and electrical control system and in the performance of plumbing, welding, and cutting work;
5. Does maintenance on buildings and equipment, including painting, grounds work, and snow removal;
6. Operates vehicles and equipment in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer system, pipelines, etc., and, when assigned maintains vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, backhoes, etc.
7. Maintains, repairs and replaces sewer lines;
8. Makes taps on sewer mains and installs service for customers;
9. Installs, reads, maintains and repairs meters, gauges and recording equipment;
10. Minor landscaping on repair and extension sites;
11. Checks booster pumping stations for proper operation and maintenance;
12. Lubricates equipment and checks for equipment malfunction;
13. Makes adjustments to equipment to improve operation;
14. Does plumbing work;
15. Inspects and services mechanical and electrical control systems;
16. Investigates complaints and reports on action taken to Superintendent;
17. Performs inspection on sewers for compliance of sewer ordinance;
18. May maintain clerical records related to work;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Working knowledge of the common practices, tools, motorized equipment, and terminology involved in the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plant, pump station, and distribution system; skill in the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, gauges, and other accessory equipment; ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment; ability to understand and carry out simple verbal and written instructions; ability to perform heavy labor for extended periods during emergencies; ability to wear a respirator and work in confined spaces; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State equivalency diploma and one of the following:
1. One (1) year of paid experience in the maintenance of wastewater treatment plant or related equipment* or the construction, maintenance or service phases of a distribution system; OR
2. One (1) year of related specialized formal education beyond the required level.
NOTE: Related equipment shall include but not be limited to diesel, electric or gasoline driven equipment; chain, gear, belt, or direct drive mixer, conveyors, collectors, grinders, pumps, compressors, blowers, generators, boilers, structural repair equipment, welders, sprayers, sanders etc.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
