Position Summary
MedCare Transportation provides nonemergency medical transportation for a healthcare program serving frail and elderly passengers. As an NEMT Driver, you safely transport medically stable passengers to and from program centers and medical appointments, including ambulatory, wheelchair, and bariatric wheelchair passengers. You operate the vehicle, assist passengers and their mobility devices, secure all loads, and deliver professional, respectful service within the philosophy and protocols of the program we serve.
Essential Duties
- Safely operate company vehicles to transport passengers on scheduled and on demand trips.
- Assist ambulatory passengers and those using wheelchairs, walkers, and canes entering and exiting the vehicle.
- Operate hydraulic lifts and ramps and secure wheelchairs using approved securement systems.
- Conduct pre trip and post trip vehicle inspections and report mechanical or safety issues.
- Maintain accurate trip records and complete required documentation.
- Protect passenger privacy and comply with HIPAA at all times.
- Follow all dispatch, routing, and on time performance protocols.
Physical Requirements (Essential Functions)
This is a physically demanding role. You must be able to:
- Push and maneuver passengers in standard and bariatric wheelchairs, including bariatric passengers weighing up to 250 lbs, across ramps, lifts, thresholds, and uneven surfaces.
- Assist ambulatory passengers with limited mobility, including those using walkers, canes, and crutches.
- Assist with passenger transfers between wheelchair, vehicle seat, and personal mobility devices.
- Lift and carry mobility equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, and stand throughout the shift.
- Enter and exit the vehicle repeatedly and sit and drive for extended periods.
- Work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.

Personnel and Program Integrity Requirements
This role serves a frail and elderly population, and all of the following must be satisfied before and during employment:
- Be legally authorized to perform the role, holding a valid state driver license or CDL, and work strictly within the authorized scope of a transportation driver, which does not include clinical care.
- Have at least one year of experience working with a frail or elderly population, or complete training on working with a frail or elderly population upon hire.
- Meet a standardized set of position specific competencies before working independently, and on an ongoing and annual basis thereafter.
- Receive medical clearance for communicable diseases through a physical examination or a documented risk assessment, and be determined free of active tuberculosis, before any direct passenger contact.
- Have all immunizations up to date before engaging in passenger contact.
- Clear a background check showing no Medicare or Medicaid program exclusions, no convictions related to healthcare or social service programs, no crimes related to physical, sexual, drug, or alcohol abuse, and no findings of abuse, neglect, or mistreatment. Consistent with the California Fair Chance Act, conviction history is reviewed only after a conditional offer of employment.
- Complete a program specific orientation covering the program's mission, philosophy, participant rights, emergency plan, code of ethics, the program benefit, and job specific policies and procedures.
- Sign an agreement to abide by the philosophy, practices, and protocols of the program we serve.
Transportation Services Requirements
- Maintain documented training in managing the special needs of frail passengers and in handling transit emergency situations.
Required Qualifications
- At least 21 years of age (minimum age may be higher based on insurance and broker requirements).
- Valid California Class C driver license in good standing, or CDL where the assigned vehicle requires it.
- Clean motor vehicle record acceptable to MedCare and its insurers, subject to a California DMV driving history review.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain before starting.
- Ability to pass a DOT style medical examination, including the Medical Examination Report (MCSA 5875) and Medical Examiner's Certificate (MCSA 5876).
- Ability to pass a drug and alcohol screen before starting and comply with the ongoing testing policy.
Language Preference
Given the population we serve, bilingual drivers are strongly preferred. Preferred language combinations include:
- Mandarin and English
- Cantonese and English
- Vietnamese and English
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior NEMT, paratransit, home health, or caregiving experience.
- NEMTAC Certified Transport Specialist (CTS) or Passenger Assistance, Safety, and Sensitivity (PASS) training.
- Direct experience serving frail, geriatric, or disabled populations.
Work Environment and Schedule
Field based role operating across the service area. Shifts may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends based on trip demand. Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.
