Custodian I Overview

This position is responsible for maintaining classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and school grounds in a clean, attractive, and safe condition. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, enjoys working independently while being part of a collaborative team, and understands the important role a well-maintained campus plays in creating a positive learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Clean, sanitize, and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, multipurpose rooms, and other campus facilities.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, and polish a variety of floor surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the campus and replace liners.
- Clean windows, doors, walls, furniture, drinking fountains, and other fixtures.
- Replenish restroom supplies and custodial materials as needed.
- Maintain the appearance of school grounds by removing litter, sweeping walkways, and keeping outdoor areas clean and inviting.
- Perform light landscaping duties, including weeding, trimming shrubs, watering plants, and maintaining planter beds.
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, assemblies, and special events.
- Operate custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, pressure washers, and other cleaning tools safely and efficiently.
- Safely use, store, and dispose of cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety standards and established procedures.
- Inspect facilities for maintenance needs, safety concerns, or vandalism and report issues promptly.
- Respond to spills, weather-related clean-up, and other unexpected custodial needs.
- Secure assigned buildings and facilities at the end of shifts by locking doors, turning off lights, and ensuring campus security procedures are followed.
- Work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, and fellow maintenance staff to support the daily operation of the school.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Previous custodial, maintenance, or facilities experience is desirable but not required.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, custodial equipment, and the safe handling of cleaning products is preferred.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and complete assignments efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
- Dependable, punctual, and committed to providing excellent service.
- Ability to communicate professionally and work effectively with staff, students, parents, and visitors.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Operate custodial equipment safely and effectively.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
