SUMMARY
Responsibilities involve project management related to shellfish fisheries resource co-management and research. The employee has the principal responsibility for the design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data and develops conclusions and recommendations for management and research. The applicant is expected to perform work independently with limited supervisory oversight. This position will be the lead for the Shellfish Program’s Dive Fisheries Division; specifically geoduck (Panopea generosa), horse clams (Tresus capax), California sea cucumber (Parastichopus californicus) and sea urchins (Strongylocentrotidae & Mesocentrotus spp.) fisheries.
Your Responsibilities
- Use fisheries dependent and independent data to provide input on annual quotas and manner of fishing.
- Develop and use fisheries models to generate trends and forecasts to facilitate management decisions.
- Co-manage species by region with other Salish Sea Tribes and Washington State agencies. Participate in technical and policy co-management meetings and forums and contribute to developing annual management plans.
- Plan and execute subtidal stock assessment surveys according to accepted protocols. Duties include, but are not limited to, survey preparation using ArcGIS Pro, schedule and supervise divers, operate the dive research vessel, coordinate data collection, perform statistical analyses, and write reports.
- Work closely with Suquamish Seafoods Enterprises (SSE) and the fishing community and maintain landing records.
- Meet regularly with SSE staff and assist SSE with intertidal geoduck cultures.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of data related to all shellfish projects including, but not limited to, crustaceans and intertidal bivalves.
- Monitor intertidal bivalve shellfish harvests and conduct weigh-outs, when needed.
- Manage and maintain scientific supplies and equipment related to crab and shrimp surveys, bivalve surveys, and SCUBA.
Qualifications You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in a natural sciences field, preferably related to aquatic sciences, fisheries, or marine biology
- 5 years professional experience (Master's 1 yr/ Ph.D substitutes for 2 years).
- Experience managing marine animal populations in a fisheries context is a strong asset.
- PADI or NAUI open water dive certification required; advanced certifications preferred.
- Experience conducting scientific dive surveys in depths ranging from -20 to -80 feet.
- Experience diving in cold water environment an asset.
- Knowledge of shellfish fisheries rules and regulations, including applicable National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) rules.
- Knowledge of harvest management techniques, natural production, methods of biological data collection and interpretation.
- Knowledge of statistical and research theories and techniques, experimental designs, and population measurement techniques.
- Knowledge of software packages such as ArcGIS pro, R, Access database, and MS Office.
What to Expect

- This position requires the ability to be flexible most of the time to accommodate field conditions and different fisheries programs.
- The position requires lifting, walking on uneven surfaces and being outdoors in various weather conditions.
- The position also requires office work mostly during the fall and winter seasons, hybrid work possible 1-2 days per week during these seasons.
- Limited night work (October to March approximately 3 nights/month), and/or alternative hour schedule to work around fishery scheduling or tide cycles.
