Purpose of Role
The Lead Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, readiness, and overall upkeep of all church facilities. This role ensures the building is consistently clean, organized, and prepared for services, ministry activities, and events. The Lead Custodian also oversees part-time custodial staff and ensures all cleaning standards are met.
Structure:
One full-time Lead Custodian with part-time custodial support as needed.
Core Responsibilities:
Maintain cleanliness of all church spaces including sanctuary, restrooms, offices, hallways, classrooms, and fellowship areas. Empty trash, sweep, mop, and vacuum on a regular basis. Maintain high-touch surfaces and overall presentation of the building. Ensure all areas remain clean and ready for use.
Oversee part-time custodial staff by creating and managing cleaning schedules, ensuring all tasks are completed properly, and maintaining consistent standards across the team.
Prepare spaces for services and events by setting up tables, chairs, and basic room arrangements. Break down and reset all spaces after use. Ensure rooms are returned to standard layout.
Monitor the condition of the building and report maintenance needs through the proper process. Assist with minor repairs if capable. Preference will be given to candidates with basic handyman skills.
Monitor cleaning supplies, keep storage areas organized, and notify the secretary when restocking is needed.
Weekend Responsibilities:
Primary focus is ensuring the building is prepared for services and events. Sunday presence is not required on a weekly basis, but is required for major services, holidays, or large events. Friday and Saturday availability is required as needed for event setup and preparation. When scheduled, arrive early to ensure all spaces are clean, stocked, and ready prior to use.
Post-service and event cleanup is the responsibility of the custodial team. Ministry leaders are responsible for general cleanup of their events, while the custodial team is responsible for floor care and ensuring the building is fully reset and returned to standard condition.
Cleaning Standards:
Restrooms must be checked and maintained daily. Sanctuary must be cleaned within one to two days following Sunday service. Trash must be emptied on a schedule that aligns with building use and volume, and as needed to maintain cleanliness. The building should consistently remain in a condition that is clean, orderly, and ready for immediate use.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform duties including lifting, bending, standing, and moving equipment as needed.
Key Expectations:
Maintain reliable attendance and consistency in work. Take ownership of the building’s condition without requiring constant supervision. Follow all established systems and processes. Communicate clearly with the Director of Operations. Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization at all times.
Inventory Management & Organization:
Maintain organization and oversight of all custodial and facility-related supplies, including cleaning products, paper goods, kitchen items, and church decorations. Ensure storage areas are kept clean, orderly, and easily accessible. Monitor inventory levels on a regular basis and notify the church secretary when supplies are low or need to be restocked. Assist with organizing seasonal and event-related decorations and ensure all items are properly stored and accounted for after use.
Standards of Operation:
All requests must be submitted through the proper system and not handled verbally. The building must always be clean, reset, and ready for the next use. The Lead Custodian is responsible for ensuring consistency across all custodial operations and staff.
Role Limitations:
This position does not manage ministry activities, scheduling decisions, or respond to unapproved or informal requests outside of the established process.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required Education: High school diploma or GED and previously related experience
