JOB SUMMARY
A medium-to-senior level hybrid operator position responsible for setting up and operating injection molding equipment and supporting the Instrument Department when molding coverage is not required. The employee ensures machinery and processes are set up, functioning properly, and producing materials that conform to company quality, quantity, efficiency, and safety standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Cross-train fellow employees at the same level or below as assigned.
· Provide direction within the assigned sub-department when needed and collaborate cross-functionally between Molding, Instruments, Quality, Maintenance, and Production leadership.
PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
· Perform all applicable Operator II responsibilities and selected Operator III-level responsibilities as required by production demand, training, and management direction.
· Molding Department - Injection Molding Setup and Operation
· Set up, start up, operate, monitor, and shut down injection molding machines in accordance with approved work instructions, manufacturing orders, and quality requirements.
· Perform mold changeover support including tooling setup, fixture verification, resin preparation, dryer/vacuum/blending equipment checks, and line clearance activities as trained and authorized.
· Verify machine readiness, tooling condition, resin/material availability, auxiliary equipment, chillers, pumps, air/water line pressures, and process settings before production release.
· Monitor parts during production for visual defects, dimensional concerns, short shots, flash, contamination, process drift, and other nonconformances; escalate issues promptly.
· Document production activity, inspection results, scrap, downtime, adjustments, and required quality records accurately and legibly.
· Instrument Department - Cross-Functional Support
· When not required in Molding, support Instrument Department operations including sanding, shaping, polishing, sharpening, brazing, welding, bending, finishing, assembly, and inspection activities based on training and qualification.
· Perform fine polishing, limited sharpening, tumbling, machine brazing, equipment setup, and metal fabrication work consistent with Operator II responsibilities.
· Perform more complex instrument work as qualified, including difficult sizing, shaping, sharpening, finishing, roughing, complex brazing, TIG welding, and selected trachea tube or surgical instrument operations.
· Maintain written quality control records for assembled devices and support manufacturing documentation accuracy by identifying needed updates or corrections.
· Follow Good Documentation Practices, safety procedures, line clearance requirements, material identification and traceability requirements, and applicable quality system procedures.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES
· Ability to set up and operate injection molding machines and related auxiliary equipment after appropriate training and qualification.
· Working understanding of machine mechanics, process settings, tooling, fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, pressures, temperatures, and basic troubleshooting indicators.
· Ability to follow written instructions, diagrams, blueprints, manufacturing orders, and approved procedures.
· Ability to determine whether machinery and processes are operating properly based on specifications and expected results.
· Ability to support both molding and instrument production priorities with flexibility and urgency.
· Strong attention to quality, safety, cleanliness, documentation accuracy, and escalation of abnormal conditions.
· Ability to complete paperwork accurately and legibly.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational school diploma preferred.
· Minimum of two years of manufacturing, molding, machine operation, or metal fabrication experience required; additional injection molding setup experience preferred.
· Prior experience in medical device manufacturing, instrument manufacturing, welding, brazing, tooling, or quality-controlled production environment preferred.
· Must complete job-specific training and demonstrate competency before independently performing assigned setup, molding, or instrument operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Must be able to work in noisy manufacturing environments.
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
· Must be able to bend, stretch, squat, stand, and climb as needed to access machines, tooling, fixtures, and work areas.
· Must be able to tolerate manufacturing process odors, chemical/process smells, resin handling environments, and normal production conditions.
ROLE FLEXIBILITY / DEPLOYMENT - This position is intended to provide flexible coverage between the Molding Department and Instrument Department. Primary assignments may shift based on production demand, machine coverage, backlog priorities, training status, and supervisor direction.
Pay: $28.00 - $31.00 per hour
