Job Summary
The Shop / Fleet Foreman directs and executes the maintenance, organization, and upkeep for a construction company with approximately 20 medium- and heavy-duty trucks, several medium duty trailers and equipment. This is a highly hands-on role combining mechanical work, facility management, and periodic employee training. The foreman performs in-house repairs, coordinates assets for outsourced service / repairs, manages the construction yard and shop spaces, and may assist in hands-on equipment training and certifications for field personnel on specialized equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Vendor Management
- Perform hands-on repairs and routine preventive maintenance (PM) on trucks, trailers, tooling and construction equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues to determine if work should be completed in-house or outsourced to specialized external vendors.
- Coordinate outside repairs, negotiate quotes, and track vendor timelines to ensure rapid vehicle and equipment turnaround.
- Transports fleet to / from outsourced service providers and to / from jo sites. On occasion this may require out of town travel and overnight stay.
- Maintain detailed digital maintenance records and inspection files for all fleet assets.
Facility & Asset Organization
- Manage the upkeep and organization of the shop, office, and main construction yard.
- Track, inventory, and secure company tools, specialty equipment, and spare parts.
- Enforce clean-shop policies to ensure a safe, hazard-free environment that complies with OSHA regulations.
- Coordinate the staging, maintenance, and parking of trucks, trailers, tooling, equipment and materials on the yard.
Field Training & Equipment Certification
- Lead hands-on training and safety evaluations for field personnel on the safe operation of aerial lifts, skid steers, scissor lifts, telehandlers and digger derricks.
- Issue operator certifications and document competency in alignment with OSHA and industry standards.
- Re-evaluate field staff periodically, post-incident, or when new machinery is required.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience & Certifications
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on mechanic and heavy equipment repair experience.
- Proven experience with equipment operations for aerial work platforms and material handlers.
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record or the ability to gain CDL license within 3 months.
- Knowledge and experience with various power tools
- Welding and oxygen acetylene torch experience preferred
Technical & Professional Skills
- Basic knowledge and experience in mechanics of trucks, trailers, tools, small engines.
- Proficiency with GPS telematics platforms to pull data and monitor fleet health and driver performance. Notify Operations Mgr. of violations.
- Proficiency with purchasing software or fleet management systems to issue purchase orders and track parts expenses.
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills to manage a busy yard, inventory, and safety compliance documentation.
- Clear communication and instructional abilities to effectively train field workers of varying experience levels.
- Ability to multitask, manage daily shop priorities, and report effectively to both Project Managers and the Operations Manager.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, climb onto heavy equipment, and work in varied indoor shop and outdoor weather conditions.
Other Duties
- Our employees are a group of people that wear many hats. This position may be expected to jump in where needed to assist other departments with tasks such as:
- Assisting sales reps and project managers with job site measurements
- Assisting controller with inventory
- Assisting construction crews with job site installations
- Any other duties as assigned
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $27.00 per hour
