JOB SUMMARY:
An extruder operator looks after the operations, repairs and upkeep of the equipment. The Extruding Machine Operator job function is to set up, operate, or tend machines involving single stage and compound dies, to extrude tubing components to close tolerances, for further assembly into critical medical devices, working within the limits of regulatory standards and internal procedures. Must have solid knowledge and experience with multi-lumen tube extrusion process; basic manufacturing processes; waste elimination through Lean Manufacturing will be required to be successful in this position.
· Works from production schedules, operating procedures, manuals, quality standards, logs and verbal instructions.
· Sets up, starts up, operates and shuts down plastic extrusion equipment. Assembles designated tooling, where tooling may involve single stage or compound dies. Positions tooling in place in extrusion machine. Sets and adjusts tool and die positions, heat, air, water and other controls to ensure that product is produced to standard.
· Loads materials into extruding machines, using hand tools, and adjust feed mechanisms to set feed rates; Moves materials to extruder, sets up vacuum loader to fill hopper. Sets and adjusts vacuum controls and repositions material as required to maintain constant material flow.
· Starts metering pumps and observes operation of machines and equipment to ensure continuous flow of filaments extruded to detect processing defects; Starts up and shuts down cooling trough and ensures that product runs properly through the cooling operation; Sets and adjusts operating speeds, feeds and cut off rates using computerized or analog controls.
· Moves controls to activate and adjust extruding machines; Records details of machine malfunctions.
· Notifies management of defects, and adjusts extruding machines; Stops machines when processes are complete or when malfunctions are detected.
· Observes flow of finish across finish rollers, and turn valves to adjust flow to specifications; Observes machine operations, control boards, and gauges to detect malfunctions such as clogged bushings and defective binder applicators.
· Records operating parameters and quality checks. Monitors equipment operation and product quality and make required adjustments to suit variations in operating conditions and product quality;
· Complete work documentation in compliance with FDA, GMP, ISO and operating procedures; Uses relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
· Removes and cleans dies and tools and internal chambers of extrusion equipment as required to remove excess material or prepare for new run; Check all pins and dies for wear after each use.

· Must have a High School Diploma or GED
· Preferred experience with plastics extrusion machine operation, set up, diagnosing and tending to machines and equipment; Extrusion of multilumen and bubble tubing highly desirable.
· Sound technical skills/knowledge of machines and tools, including design, uses, repair, and maintenance. Experience with several hand-tools, gauges, scrapers, screwdrivers etc to set up the right configuration as per the product specifications.
· Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control costs for maximizing effective manufacture/distribution of goods.
· Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing practices, GMP guidelines and ISO 9000 elements preferred.
· Possesses good communication skills, verbal, reading and writing skills.
