This is a part-time, exempt, salaried position requiring an estimated 7-10 hours per week. The position pays $300-350 per week, DOE.
Key Responsibilities
Worship Leadership & Performance
- Lead Congregational Singing: In conversation with the Pastor and other members of the Worship Team, select and lead hymns and service music for weekly Sunday worship services, ensuring variety and theological alignment with a progressive Christian perspective. Services include Sunday mornings and occasional special services, like Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve, at other times.
- Collaboratively Design Music in Worship: Working with the pastor and volunteers, create opportunities for members and friends to experience spirituality via music. Experimentation and inviting in community members is encouraged!
- Support musicians: Recruit, rehearse, and direct the volunteer choir, for regular or occasional singing in worship. Identify and support other potential ensembles and individual musicians in sharing their musical gifts with the church.
- Musician Coordination: Identify, audition, and schedule guest musicians (instrumentalists, vocalists, etc.) to enhance special worship services and events.
- Music Selection: Curate a diverse musical repertoire, ranging from traditional hymns to contemporary and global music, that speaks to the congregation's progressive values of social justice, peace, and inclusivity.
Program Development & Administration
- Develop Musical Capacity: Work with the Pastor and Music Committee to envision and implement strategies for developing the overall musical capacity and participation within the congregation.
- Administrative Management: Oversee the administrative details of the music program, including:
- Maintaining the music library.
- Managing the music budget for expenditures like sheet music, instrumental needs, and guest musician fees.
- Copyright & Licensing: Ensure thorough compliance with all copyright laws by managing and tracking usage under the church’s performance licenses (e.g., CCLI, OneLicense) for all music used in worship and publications.
Qualifications
Required
- Demonstrated proficiency in leading both congregational singing and volunteer ensembles
- Excellent musical skills (e.g., strong keyboard or instrumental skills, vocal proficiency).
- Prior experience in church music or a comparable setting.
- Familiarity with various music styles appropriate for progressive Christian worship, or willingness to become familiar.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in administrative tasks like scheduling and copyright compliance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Pastor, staff, and lay leaders.

- Interpersonal skills: Ability to navigate conflict with professionalism, ability to notice and address problems as they arise.
- Hospitality: Ability to warmly welcome new volunteers and new participants to the congregation and to the music program, and to help them feel connected.
- Reporting: The Music Director reports to the Pastor or designated church committee.
Pay: $300.00 - $350.00 per week
