Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Field Safety Technician to support excavation and underground utility operations on active construction projects. This position is responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring OSHA compliance, conducting field inspections, assisting with training, and helping crews maintain safe work practices related to trenching, excavation, utility installation, heavy equipment operations, and underground construction activities.
The ideal candidate will have experience working around excavation and utility work, strong communication skills, and the ability to work directly with field crews, supervisors, subcontractors, and project management teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct daily field safety inspections and audits on excavation and underground utility operations.
- Monitor trenching and excavation activities to ensure compliance with OSHA Subpart P requirements.
- Assist with implementation and enforcement of company safety policies and procedures.
- Verify proper use of trench protection systems including:
- Shoring
- Shielding
- Sloping and benching
- Support utility installation activities including water, sewer, storm, electrical, and communication systems.
- Identify hazards related to:
- Underground utilities
- Heavy equipment operations
- Line-of-fire exposures
- Confined spaces
- Struck-by and caught-between hazards
- Participate in pre-task planning, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and daily safety meetings.
- Assist with incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation and inspection records.
- Coordinate with field supervision to correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Conduct and assist with safety orientations and toolbox talks.
- Ensure proper PPE usage and compliance on project sites.
- Monitor subcontractor safety performance and compliance.
- Assist with utility locating awareness and safe excavation practices.
- Promote a positive and proactive safety culture throughout the project.
Minimum Qualifications
- OSHA 30 Certification
- Experience in construction safety, excavation, underground utilities, or heavy civil construction preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trenching standards.
- Ability to work in active construction environments and around heavy equipment.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and recommend corrective actions.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and digital safety documentation platforms.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 510 Certification Preferred
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred
- Experience with excavation, trenching, utility installation, and heavy civil operations strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of underground utility locating and damage prevention practices.
- Experience conducting field audits and safety inspections.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites daily.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders, enter trenches, and access active work areas safely.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based and will involve daily interaction with construction crews and project management on active excavation and underground utility projects.
