We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Travel Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Stepdown care to join our healthcare team in Utica. Key responsibilities include delivering expert bedside care, monitoring vital signs and physiological parameters, administering medications and treatments with precision, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans. You will also be responsible for accurate documentation within electronic health record (EHR) systems, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations, and supporting patient education initiatives. This position emphasizes the importance of adaptability, clinical excellence, and compassionate patient engagement in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in the PCU/Stepdown unit, including assessments, vital sign monitoring, and physiological evaluations.
- Administer medications, including IV infusions, injections, and controlled substances following aseptic techniques.
- Manage complex cases involving acute pain management, cardiac catheterization recovery, ventilator support, or dialysis procedures.
- Utilize EMR/EHR systems such as Cerner or Epic for accurate documentation of patient care activities.
- Collaborate with physicians and healthcare teams on diagnostic evaluations, discharge planning, and treatment adjustments.
- Monitor patients with infectious diseases or those requiring trauma or ICU-level care; respond promptly to emergencies.
- Conduct patient education on medication administration, wound care (including suturing), ostomy management, and mobility assistance.
- Maintain strict infection control practices and ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Support triage assessments for incoming patients and assist in managing complex cases involving behavioral health or memory care needs.
- Demonstrate proficiency in laboratory specimen collection, phlebotomy, catheter care, and basic life support procedures.
Qualifications
- Valid RN license in the state of practice; current BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred.
- Minimum of two years of critical care experience within hospital settings such as ICU or Level I Trauma Centers.
- Prior experience working in PCU/Stepdown units with exposure to telemetry monitoring.
- Proficiency with EMR/EHR platforms including Cerner or Epic; familiarity with ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10).
- Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology related to acute and chronic conditions.
- Experience managing patients requiring ventilator support, IV infusions, or complex wound care.
- Ability to perform physical examinations accurately and conduct diagnostic evaluations as needed.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
- Additional skills such as suturing, ostomy care, trauma medicine experience, or long-term care background are highly desirable.
