American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Ortho night shift position at a Level 1 Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital, requiring 2 years of recent specialty experience and both Kansas and Missouri RN licenses in hand.

Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with an orthopedic focus at a 456-bed tertiary care, Level 1 Trauma, 5-time Magnet-recognized teaching hospital

High-acuity orthopedic patient population including trauma, post-op total joints, ORIF, laminectomy, hand surgery, bladder suspension, and overflow gynecological and eye surgeries

Patient ratio is 1:5, with the possibility of flexing to 1:6 on rare occasions

High patient volume with significant daily admissions and turnover

Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15
-
8 weekend shifts required per 6-week scheduling period, with shifts falling on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday

On-call required: 1–2 weekdays per week and 2 weekends per 13-week contract

Regular floating may be required between departments, units, and other PCU floors within scope of practice

Charting system: Epic (experience required as both Kansas and Missouri licenses are needed for cross-facility floating)

Special equipment used includes traction, braces, casts, crutches, doppler, walker, hemovac, PICC line, midline, Alaris pump, and PCA
-
Free on-site parking available

Active RN license for both Kansas and Missouri (or a Compact license covering both states) must be in hand at time of consideration — unwillingness to hold both licenses may result in assignment cancellation

Current BLS and ACLS certifications required

Minimum 2 years of recent PCU/Stepdown specialty experience required, including at least 1 full year of in-specialty experience within the past 12 months with no employment gap greater than 90 days

Level 1 Trauma and academic teaching hospital experience required

Proficiency with blood product administration, peripheral line care and management, PICC line management, and IV starts required

Experience with PCA management required
-
Skills in orthopedic trauma care, peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements, and surgical drain management required

Wound care and wound vac experience required

Familiarity with isolation precautions and phlebotomy required

2 professional references required: at least one must be supervisor-level or above; the second may be a charge RN — all references must be from within the past year and from someone who has worked with the candidate within that time

SSN required for consideration

Candidates must reside at least 75 miles from the facility to be eligible — local candidates are not accepted

Charge RN assignments may be required as needed per unit policy

Holiday shift coverage is required as assigned

RTO is limited to a maximum of 7 days for the contract duration; RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted at time of consideration
