As Music Librarian, you’ll play a key role in procuring, tracking and organizing the organizations music library.
Position Overview
The Music Librarian is responsible for providing and organizing all the music for orchestral rehearsals and performances, and for maintaining the orchestra’s library of parts and scores. The Music Librarian reports to the Director of Operations, coordinates with the Chorus Master when appropriate, and works closely with the Symphony office. This is an hourly non-exempt position.
The Music Librarian ensures that every musician has the right music at the right time and that the SSO music library remains organized, accurate, and performance ready. Working closely with conductors, musicians, and staff, this position oversees music acquisition, preparation, distribution, and library maintenance while supporting smooth rehearsals and successful performances.
Key responsibilities include acquiring sheet music for the greater ensemble and distributing it in a timely manner. The role is also the steward of the organization’s music collection, ensuring that both physical and digital materials are organized, accessible, and accurately maintained. Required Qualifications & Skills
The successful candidate is exceptionally organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and calm when under deadlines. They enjoy supporting musicians, communicating clearly with conductors and staff, and building systems that make rehearsals easier for everyone. Familiarity with orchestral music, instrumentation, and music preparation practices is strongly preferred.
Minimum qualifications include a strong music background, a love of music, being 18 years or older, having a high school diploma or GED, U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency, and a valid, clean Washington State driver’s license.
Compensation, Schedule, and Location
The hiring wage for this role is $20-22/hour with strong potential for growth; hours are approximately 20-30 hours per concert cycle. This position accrues sick leave and has a flexible schedule. The duties are performed in the Symphony office, rehearsal and performance venues and occasionally from home. At times, there may be other duties assigned that are pertinent to the music library role.
ADA Specifications
This position requires the ability to sit, climb stairs, stand, lift up to 30 lbs., as well as speak, and hear, sometimes for extended periods of time. It does require the ability to use a computer and office equipment traditionally found in office settings. There will be limited local and regional travel.
