Position Overview
We are a small, dedicated immigration law firm in Shakopee, Minnesota, seeking a motivated and talented law student to join our team as a Part-Time Law Clerk. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong writer to gain hands-on experience in immigration law, including asylum and withholding of removal cases, while supporting estate planning matters.
The role emphasizes substantive legal writing and research. We value clear, persuasive storytelling and analytical skills far more than prior experience. If you excel at crafting compelling narratives and rigorously comparing case facts to legal precedent, we encourage you to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft legal arguments and briefs in support of asylum, withholding of removal, and related immigration relief.
- Conduct legal research and analyze case law.
- Prepare affidavits and supporting documentation for immigration cases.
- Assist with preparing wills, trusts, and other transactional estate planning documents.
- Contribute to client case strategy through clear and persuasive written work.
Schedule & Work Arrangement
- Flexible hours that accommodate your law school class schedule (typically 10–25 hours per week).
- Primarily in-person at our Shakopee office during the initial period to support training and collaboration.
- Hybrid/remote opportunities may become available later based on performance and demonstrated reliability.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited J.D. program (1L, 2L, or 3L students welcome).
- Strong writing skills are the top priority — ability to write visually compelling stories, build persuasive legal arguments, and analytically compare/contrast facts to case law.
- Excellent analytical and research abilities.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Interest in immigration law and/or estate planning is a plus.
- Writing sample required (e.g., legal brief, memo, or substantial academic paper demonstrating persuasive writing).
Prior experience is not required — we are looking for potential and strong writing talent.
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly pay based on skills and writing ability.
- Flexible scheduling around your academics.
- Hands-on mentorship and direct exposure to meaningful casework.
- Opportunity to develop practical skills in a supportive small-firm environment.
- Potential for increased hours during breaks/summer and long-term growth.
