JOB Provide direct care to students, including but not limited to medication, first aid, and emergency medical assistance. Provide nursing assessments, treatments, medication, and medical care to all students as needed for routine and acute visits. Maintain satisfactory medical records by recording and reporting of student symptoms, reactions, and progress through analysis of student records. Report pertinent medical information regarding students to the school physician and/or Nursing Administrator.
Dispense medication and other treatments necessary, including arranging appointments and follow up visits with the school’s Medical Director and/or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Prepare medications and paperwork for field trips and delegate the administration of medication, when appropriate and as allowed by state law, to an approved Unlicensed Assistive Personnel. Perform other related nursing duties as assigned or required. Coordinates the organization of documentation as directed by DHEC, Medicaid, and SCSDB Policies Procedures. Create and maintain Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and satisfactorily completes other documentation required for compliance of health care regulations. Provides supervision and instructs other medical professionals and para professionals in the treatment or care of the students. Serves as the liaison between school health services, parents, physicians and other related medical disciplines.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Graduation from an accredited school of nursing program (Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree). Must have a current SC RN license issued by the State Board of Nursing and three years of full-time nursing experience. Knowledge of school nursing practice, and DHEC requirements related to schools, preferred. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practice of nursing; ability to follow detailed instructions of a technical nature; ability to prepare and present educational programs to non-medical and medical personnel; and ability to make decisions and perform work independently. Must have good computer skills. Must be able to develop, foster and promote good interdisciplinary relationships with nurses, teachers, dorm staff, parents, physicians, etc. Verbal and written communication and presentations must be clear, professional, and grammatically correct. This position may require communication modalities dependent upon employment placement.
