The Director of Cloud Engineering is responsible for shaping and executing enterprise cloud strategy while driving reliability, security, and scalability across cloud platforms and services. In this role, you will define the target cloud architecture, establish standards and governance, and lead platform engineering, SRE, and cloud security teams to deliver resilient and high-performing solutions. You will own the cloud operating model while partnering with product and engineering leaders to accelerate delivery, modernize applications, and enable seamless integrations. POSITION SUMMARY
This is a senior engineering leader accountable for the strategy, reliability, security, cost efficiency, and operational excellence of Banner’s cloud platforms and cloud-enabled delivery capabilities. This position is responsible for architecture standards, digital and platform engineering, governance, and service reliability while enabling product and engineering teams to deliver faster with reduced risk. This role exists to ensure cloud investments deliver measurable outcomes, resilient production services, predictable delivery, secure-by-default platforms, and optimized spending. Creates business value by accelerating product time-to-market, reducing outages and security exposure, improving engineering productivity through self-service platforms, and contributing to the development of financial and operational controls that scale.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Defines cloud strategy and target state. Provides leadership for the design, governance, and ongoing optimization of cloud services and SaaS platforms, ensuring scalability, security, reliability, and alignment with organizational needs. Leads the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new software platforms and cloud services. Sets the platform product direction for internal cloud platforms including landing zones, identity, automation enablement, observability and container platforms with measurable adoption and satisfaction targets.
2. Owns the cloud operating model. Partners with leadership to assess technology needs, prioritize initiatives, and support business process improvement enabled by software and cloud solutions. Owns cloud operating model, specifically the service catalog, escalation model, SLAs/SLOs, and governance that scales across teams and portfolios.
3. Creates and manages cloud roadmap and investment plan. Works with the Cloud Leadership team to create cloud roadmap and investment plan which includes capabilities, deprecations, technical debt reduction, and modernization milestones.
4. Establishes cloud and platform standards. Leads the effort to establish cloud and platform standards for architecture patterns, reference designs, and approved services to reduce complexity and risk. Partners and collaborates with the Cybersecurity team to align cloud controls, threat modeling, vulnerability management, and compliance evidence generation. Provides leadership for identity, access, and role-based security as it relates to enterprise applications and cloud services. Manages cloud service lifecycle (intake design build operate optimize retire), including change and release governance for shared platforms.
5. Ensures Digital Engineering and Integration Enablement. Ensures sufficient and timely support for new system implementations and upgrades, working closely with all Banner IT teams and functional stakeholders. Oversees application integration efforts to ensure effective data exchange and interoperability between enterprise systems and cloud services to ensure cohesive delivery and support.
6. Leads the Application Rewrite Stream for DC to Cloud Migration. Develops and maintains long-term plans for application modernization, cloud migration, system upgrades, and technology sustainability. Partners with Product and Engineering leaders to enable delivery goals through platform capabilities, prioritizing work based on business outcomes.
7. Implements operational controls and operational excellence. Ensures the implementation of operational controls for environments (account/subscription structure, network segmentation, secrets management, access reviews, backup/DR posture). Ensures operational excellence across cloud-hosted services via incident management maturity, runbooks, on-call health, and post-incident learning.
8. Leads and develops a cloud organization. Leads Cloud Platform Architects, cloud platform engineers, SRE/platform SRE, cloud security engineers, digital engineers. Responsible for hiring, coaching, performance management, and succession planning. Drives reliability engineering practices (SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, capacity planning, resilience testing) across platform and product teams.
9. Builds a culture of automation and learning with blameless postmortems, measurable reliability work, documentation discipline, and internal platform product thinking.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 10 years of experience in leadership roles managing engineering teams.
5+ years of experience leading microservices cloud architecture, design and implementation at scale, which includes a minimum of 3 years of Kubernetes deployed workload on cloud platform. Must have experience with AI development tools.
Proven experience with platform operating models and product-driven delivery approaches. Hands-on experience designing and scaling public cloud platforms, preferably AWS and Azure. Experience with large-scale cloud migrations and modernization initiatives.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering disciplines (i.e., Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, etc.).
Healthcare industry experience.
Professional level certifications on public cloud platforms (Google, AWS and Azure preferred).
Deep knowledge of at least one cloud provider between Google, AWS and Azure and working knowledge of other clouds.
Experience with cloud cost optimization.
Experience with specific tools and platforms including:

Estimated Pay Range:
$70.30 - $117.16 / hour Banner Health is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted compensation range is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay Banner Health in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. This range is based on possible base salaries and does not include the value of our total rewards package.
