About the Role
The Caseworker I plays a vital role in supporting individuals involved in community corrections programming. This position is responsible for client intake, ongoing case management, and release planning, with a focus on helping clients become positive, productive, and prosocial members of the community.
Key Responsibilities
Intake
- Administer and utilize quantitative assessments to evaluate client risk and criminogenic needs (including criminal history, education/employment, financial stability, family and social support, substance use, peer associations, and behavioral patterns).
- Accurately enter ORAS results into Gateway and ORION systems in a timely manner.
- Identify barriers to successful program completion and respond appropriately (e.g., age, education level, medical or mental health needs, transportation, housing).
- Complete and/or review intake and release packets, including PREA screening results.
During Placement
- Support clients in developing positive behaviors and community connections.
- Act as a client advocate while ensuring accountability to program rules and expectations.
- Properly administer assessment tools and ensure required updates are completed.
- Develop and maintain Individual Program Plans (IPP) in accordance with established criteria and standards.
Release
- Make referrals based on clients’ ongoing needs and recommended service levels outlined in the Community Plan.
- Ensure post-tests and exit evaluations are completed prior to release.
- Assist clients with securing appropriate housing.
- Prepare clients for successful program completion and transition using an approved Community Plan.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Corrections, or a related field required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Minimum of six (6) months of experience in corrections and/or social services preferred
Federal Caseworker Requirements:
- Associate’s degree in social services, human services, criminal justice, or behavioral science from an accredited institution
- Two (2) years of work experience in human services, corrections, or community-based services
Additional Requirements:
- Must obtain and maintain ORAS certification through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections in partnership with the University of Cincinnati
- Strong organizational and attention-to-detail skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Reliable transportation, valid Ohio driver’s license, and an insurable driving record
- Ability to perform cognitively demanding tasks, work under stress, and respond effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to work collaboratively with agency staff, external partners, and a diverse client population
