Applications Engineer
Omaha, Nebraska (On-site)
Full-time
Annual base salary: $52,000–$60,000, depending on qualifications and experience
Our work rarely appears in the headlines, but the research it enables often does.
Magnetic Shields USA is the North American subsidiary of Magnetic Shields Limited, a specialist UK engineering company with decades of experience designing and manufacturing advanced magnetic shielding systems for customers around the world.
Our technology enables pioneering research in quantum technology, neuroscience, advanced medical imaging, particle physics and other demanding scientific fields. Our customers include world-leading universities, national laboratories, research institutes, hospitals and technology companies working at the forefront of science and engineering.
Backed by decades of specialist engineering expertise, we are now building the next stage of our business in North America.
We're looking for our first permanent U.S.-based employee to help shape that future.
This isn't simply engineering
It's an opportunity to work directly alongside our CEO, become part of an established international engineering company, and help build our North American business from the ground up.
Nobody starts their career in magnetic shielding.
The best people discover it.
Why this role is different
Most early-career engineering roles encourage you to specialise within a single department.
This one doesn't.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who wants to learn quickly, take responsibility and become involved in every aspect of a growing engineering business.
You'll gain experience across engineering, customer applications, quotations, project coordination, installations, marketing, AI and emerging digital technologies, business development and business operations—working directly alongside our CEO from your very first day.
Rather than being confined to a single department, you'll see how an engineering business really operates, gaining experience that would normally take years to acquire within a larger organisation.
Approximately 80% of your time will be based in our Omaha office, supporting customers, developing quotations, coordinating projects, improving business processes and helping grow the business.
The remaining time will involve travelling throughout North America to install, commission and service our specialist magnetic shielding systems.
As the company grows, so will your role.
You'll have a voice
This is a growing business, and good ideas can come from anyone.
If you see a better way of doing something, we want to hear it.
Whether that's improving an engineering process, enhancing the customer experience, developing our website, using AI and other emerging digital technologies to improve efficiency, or identifying new business opportunities, you'll be encouraged to contribute from the very beginning.
You're joining to help build the business—not simply to work in it.
Learn a rare engineering discipline
Magnetic shielding is unlike almost any other engineering field.
Our systems routinely achieve performance that depends on incredibly small construction details. Every panel overlap, joint, penetration and door interface influences the final result.
Installing these systems combines engineering knowledge with precision workmanship, patience and exceptional attention to detail.
It's a rare skill that very few engineers ever have the opportunity to learn.
No previous magnetic shielding experience is expected.
We'll teach you.
You'll receive structured product and technical development while working alongside experienced engineers in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
As part of your development, we expect you'll have opportunities to spend time at our UK headquarters. This isn't simply about formal training—it's about understanding how the wider business operates, seeing our manufacturing processes first-hand, building relationships with colleagues, and becoming part of one international engineering team.
What you'll be doing
Engineering & Customer Applications
- Learn to install, commission, service and maintain specialist magnetic shielding systems.
- Read engineering drawings and solve practical engineering problems.
- Support customers with technical and commercial enquiries.
- Prepare accurate technical and commercial quotations.
- Troubleshoot engineering and installation challenges.
- Prepare clear installation, commissioning and service documentation.
- Represent Magnetic Shields USA professionally at universities, hospitals, laboratories, research institutes and customer facilities throughout North America.
Business Operations & Growth

- Contribute ideas that improve how we work and help the company continue to grow.
Who we're looking for
We're far more interested in attitude, curiosity and potential than previous magnetic shielding experience.
You may have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics or a related technical discipline.
Alternatively, you may have gained equivalent practical engineering experience through an apprenticeship, military technical training or industry.
Most importantly, you're someone who:
- Enjoys solving technical problems.
- Takes genuine pride in producing high-quality work.
- Notices details that others miss.
- Communicates confidently with customers and colleagues.
- Learns quickly and enjoys taking on new challenges.
- Is organised, dependable and adaptable.
- Wants to help build something rather than simply maintain it.
We don't expect you to know magnetic shielding.
We do expect you to be curious.
The people who succeed at Magnetic Shields USA are those who ask questions, enjoy solving problems, notice details others miss and take pride in doing things properly.
If that sounds like you, we'll teach you the rest.
Travel & Practical Requirements
The role is typically around 80% office-based and 20% travel, although travel may occasionally be concentrated around customer projects.
Travel can sometimes involve short notice, several weeks away from home and occasional evening or weekend work.
You'll need:
- A valid driver's licence with a driving record acceptable for our commercial vehicle insurance.
- A valid passport for travel within the United States and internationally.
- The ability to work safely within laboratories, industrial facilities and construction environments.
- The ability to safely use hand and power tools.
- The ability to lift, carry or move items weighing up to 50 lb, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Legal authorisation to work in the United States.
- The ability to satisfy customer site access and security requirements where applicable.
Any background or driving record checks will be job-related, conducted following a conditional offer of employment where required by law, and carried out in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws.
What we offer
- Annual base salary of $52,000–$60,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
- Overtime pay where applicable.
- Twenty days of Paid Time Off (PTO), plus paid company holidays.
- Company contribution toward employee health insurance premiums.
- Structured product and technical development.
- Opportunities to work alongside colleagues in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
- Annual salary review.
- Eligibility for a discretionary annual performance bonus based on individual and company performance.
- Genuine long-term career development within a growing international engineering company.
Why join Magnetic Shields USA?
It's an opportunity to become part of a company whose technology quietly supports some of the world's most advanced scientific research.
You'll work directly with experienced engineers, visit fascinating customer sites, develop expertise that very few engineers possess, and help build the future of our North American business from the very beginning.
Your ideas will matter.
Your contribution will be visible.
The experience you'll gain will be unlike almost anything available in a conventional early-career engineering role.
