Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Cook is responsible for preparing food in accordance with the approved menu, current standards, guidelines, and regulations with established procedures, and as may be directed by the Executive Director to assure that quality food service is provided at all times. The Cook also maintains residents’ dietary requirements while maintaining a clean and organized kitchen.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks according to the facility's approved menu and recipes.
Prepare food in appropriate quantities for the number of residents being served.
Follow regular and modified diets, including special dietary instructions provided by the facility.
Prepare meals with consideration for residents' food preferences, allergies, and dietary restrictions.
Follow proper food-handling, sanitation, and infection-control procedures.
Maintain proper food temperatures and storage practices.
Check food quality, freshness, expiration dates, and proper labeling.
Properly store refrigerated, frozen, and dry food items.
Assist with receiving and putting away food and kitchen supplies.
Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen, food-preparation areas, equipment, and utensils.
Operate ovens, stoves, mixers, food processors, dishwashers, and other kitchen equipment safely.
Portion and plate meals appropriately for residents.
Prepare modified-texture foods when required, such as chopped, minced, soft, or pureed foods, according to facility procedures.
Coordinate with dietary/dining staff to ensure residents receive the correct meals and portions.
Communicate any food shortages, equipment problems, or resident dietary concerns to the supervisor.
Minimize food waste and use supplies efficiently.
Complete required kitchen and food-service documentation.
Follow all facility policies, California regulations, and applicable food-safety requirements.

Previous cooking experience preferred, particularly in senior living, assisted living, healthcare, hospitality, or institutional food service.
Knowledge of basic cooking techniques, food preparation, portion control, and sanitation.
Ability to prepare meals for a large number of residents.
Ability to follow recipes, menus, and special dietary instructions accurately.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move kitchen supplies as required.
Food-handler certification may be required depending on the facility and local requirements.
Ability to read, write and speak in English
Able to pass a TB test, Physical & criminal record clearance prior to beginning work in the community
