Summary

Our Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning (SPEL) is for young people between the ages of 16 and 25. As a Social Media Intern, you will be assigned to one of our storytelling groups. You will lead social media planning, posting and management for the stories your team produces. Working closely with Hola Cultura's social media staff, you will help not only promote the stories of your fellow SPEL interns, you will also be part of our fast-paced social media team producing original content and promoting our stories, podcasts, community events and more. You should ideally have work experience or a strong interest in pursuing a career in social media, marketing, journalism, nonprofit communication or a related field.
Responsibilities
With guidance from the organization's Professional Development Staff, Editors and
Fellows, Social Media Interns will:
- Attend Tuesday afternoon remote meetings and actively participate in professional development activities and story lab sessions
- Assist with brainstorming and creating social media campaigns during weekly meetings
- Carry out social media assignments remotely to support and share the stories, videos, podcasts, and events
- Serve as peer mentors to younger Interns
- Collaborate with other SPEL story team members on special projects
- Other duties, as assigned.
Requirements
- Attend online meetings each Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST; and an additional 3-5 hours of remote work hours per week
- Ability to work independently and prioritize projects with minimum supervision
- Technology oriented
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Good judgment and an ability to remain objective and engage with people of all viewpoints
- Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals
- A bachelor's degree or coursework toward a degree in Graphic, a plus
- Experience in Design, Communications, or other relevant field, a plus
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills, a plus
- Social media management experience, a plus
- Video and podcast production and multiplatform editing, a plus
- Knowledge of web and app referral traffic across social media, search and direct sources, a plus
- Experience with WordPress and Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, a plus

Professional Development & Weekly Stipend
Internships are volunteer positions for high school, college and graduate students and young adults. SPEL internships provide professional training and hands-on social media experience, as well as the opportunity to build a portfolio of published work promoting Hola Cultura and the organization's online magazine (www.holacultura.com) that attracts around 10,000 readers each month and works with larger media outlets including the Washington City Paper and WAMU/DCist, Washington's NPR station.
Interns located in Washington, D.C., and Boston, Massachusetts, also receive a volunteer stipend of $20 per week; stipends for out-of-state Interns subject to available funding.
