Position Summary
The Butcher Block Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the full-service meat counter and butcher block area, ensuring exceptional customer service, product quality, food safety compliance, merchandising execution, and operational efficiency. This position provides leadership to department associates, maintains high standards for fresh meat presentation and preparation, and supports department sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction goals.
Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Sales
- Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
- Assist customers with product selection, custom meat cuts, preparation recommendations, and special orders.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Build customer loyalty through product knowledge and personalized service.
- Support department sales growth through suggestive selling, promotions, and merchandising initiatives.
Butcher Block Operations
- Oversee daily operations of the service meat counter and butcher block area.
- Ensure meat products are cut, trimmed, packaged, labeled, and displayed according to company standards.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, and presentation throughout the day.
- Ensure service cases remain fully stocked, clean, and visually appealing.
- Maintain proper inventory levels and communicate ordering needs to department leadership.
- Support efficient workflow and production planning to meet customer demand.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide direction, coaching, and support to Butcher Block associates.
- Train associates on cutting techniques, customer service, food safety, and operational procedures.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
- Assist with onboarding and development of new associates.
- Monitor performance and provide constructive feedback to team members.
Merchandising & Product Quality
- Ensure service cases and displays meet company merchandising standards.
- Monitor product rotation, freshness, and code date compliance.
- Remove damaged, expired, or unsellable products promptly.
- Execute seasonal, holiday, and promotional merchandising programs.
- Maintain premium presentation standards to maximize sales and customer satisfaction.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor proper product handling, storage, labeling, and temperature controls.
- Maintain clean and sanitary preparation, cutting, storage, and service areas.
- Ensure associates follow all food safety and sanitation procedures.
- Support compliance with company policies and operational standards.
Inventory & Financial Performance
- Support achievement of department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink objectives.
- Assist with inventory control, receiving, and stock management.
- Help reduce shrink through proper cutting, handling, rotation, and inventory practices.
- Support inventory counts and recordkeeping activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
Safety & Asset Protection
- Promote a safe work environment for associates and customers.
- Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of knives, slicers, saws, grinders, and other equipment.
- Follow accident prevention and incident reporting procedures.
- Support loss prevention and asset protection initiatives.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas at all times.
Leadership Coverage
- Assist with daily department leadership responsibilities as assigned.
- Support department operations in the absence of Meat Department leadership.
- Communicate department priorities, expectations, and goals to associates.
- Partner with store leadership to support departmental and store-wide objectives.
- Serve as a role model for customer service, food safety, and operational excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous meat cutting, butcher, meat department, or retail food experience required.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of meat cutting techniques, product handling, and merchandising practices.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier loads with assistance when necessary.
- Ability to work in refrigerated and freezer environments.
- Ability to safely operate knives, slicers, grinders, saws, and other meat department equipment.
