Fence Estimator Reynolds Fence & Guardrail, Inc. Indian Trail, NC (Corporate Office) — with periodic travel to project sites Full-Time | Exempt | At-Will
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reynolds Fence & Guardrail, Inc. is a leading multi-state highway and specialty subcontractor providing fence, guardrail, sign, and traffic safety solutions across the Southeast. We are seeking a detail-oriented Fence Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive bids for commercial, industrial, public-agency, and specialty fencing projects. The Fence Estimator reviews plans and specifications, performs quantity takeoffs, solicits material and subcontractor pricing, and produces complete bid packages that support the company's continued growth and profitability. This role works closely with project management, operations, and field crews, and offers exposure to our broader guardrail, sign, and traffic safety product lines.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review project plans, drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop a complete and accurate scope of work for fencing projects, including chain link, ornamental/aluminum, welded wire, security and anti-climb, wood, vinyl, gates, access control, and highway right-of-way fence.
- Perform detailed material and labor quantity takeoffs using estimating and takeoff software (BidBoost) and digital plan tools.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate quotes from material suppliers and subcontractors; maintain vendor relationships and keep current pricing on file.
- Prepare complete, competitive bid proposals that account for material, labor, equipment, freight, overhead, and appropriate margins.
- Analyze DOT and public-agency bid documents (NCDOT, SCDOT, GDOT, TDOT, VDOT) and ensure compliance with specifications, bonding, and submittal deadlines.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, owners, and repeat customers — serving as a responsive, professional point of contact throughout the bidding process and following up on submitted proposals to win and grow accounts.
- Coordinate with project managers, operations, and field crews to validate production rates, means and methods, and constructability.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and conduct site visits to assess existing conditions, access, and site-specific requirements.
- Track bid results, maintain historical cost data, and continuously refine estimating benchmarks and unit pricing.
- Support value engineering, scope clarifications, and change-order pricing during project execution.
- Contribute to an integrated, growing estimating team, with opportunities to cross-train across the company's guardrail, sign, and traffic safety divisions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of estimating experience in fencing, site work, or a related construction trade.
- Proven ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and bid documents.
- Demonstrated experience performing quantity takeoffs and preparing competitive bids.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with estimating/takeoff software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent bids and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience bidding DOT and public-agency projects, including familiarity with prevailing-wage requirements.
- Working knowledge of fence product systems, leading manufacturers, and field installation methods.
- Exposure to guardrail, sign, or traffic safety estimating.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field — or equivalent trade experience.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Accuracy and Ownership — takes responsibility for the integrity of every bid.
- Communication — clearly coordinates scope and pricing with vendors, teammates, and customers.
- Customer Focus — builds trust with general contractors and owners, and treats every bid as a relationship, not just a number.
- Business Judgment — balances competitiveness with margin protection.
- Collaboration — partners effectively with operations and field leadership.
